otakulys's manga / #bullying(49)

Interval

Complete | Itsuki Kaname | 2008 released

I really liked this at first, because I hoped, despite having read enough yaoi to know better, that it was going to be about the main character getting with his love interest after overcoming the psychotic bully who was abusing him. The moment his attacker was given some development, I knew this was going to have a typical Yaoi-land ending. To be fair, as far as rape forgiveness in yaoi goes, this is absolutely not the worst I have seen. At least the uke was upset for a while, and even later, the seme wonders if the uke is still scared after what happened. But it's still annoying as hell. I don't mind rape in stories when the rapist gets what's coming to him, or at the very least doesn't end up in a relationship with his victim. But that's often not how these things go in yaoi. Still, I liked the manga enough to give it four stars despite the rape to love. It's pretty and emotional, and it's *almost* realistic, outside of the sexual assault and coercion.

Konbini-kun

Complete | junko | 2010 released

So sweet, if not a bit rushed at the end. I want to read more about these two. They're so cute.

Transient Flower

Complete | Harumi Chihiro | 2000 released

Very sad, but powerful and meaningful. The story wouldn't have had the same impact with a happy ending, but I wish I could see more of this character. She's interesting, and her story begs to be examined further. Oh well. I wish I could see her ripping out the hearts of those dick guys from before. It kind of reminds me of this horror manga that I found hilarious, about a girl who starves herself to get a guy to like her, and after she gets super skinny, he's into her, but as they kiss, she gets incredibly hungry from starving herself so long and eats him. That's how all guys like that should be handled.

Nemuru Machi no Futari

Complete | Kawabata Shiki | 2000 released

Really short, but sweet for the length.

Akiyama-kun

Ongoing | nobara aiko | 2011 released

Cute and kind of strange little manga. I like it so far. I wonder what's going to happen with that snoopy guy. There are elements of the story that are uncomfortable and odd, like the dudes sexually harassing the kid until they realize there really IS something gay going on, and then it's too far. I mean, pulling his pants down and insisting your friend give the dude a handjob "as a joke" is one thing, but actually dating a guy????!!!111 It's a pretty bizarre scene but... honestly, I've seen a semi-similar mentality in real life guys, so who knows.

U(kyou Machiko)

Ongoing | kyou machiko | 2000 released

Everybody in this story is an asshole. Kind of weird and confusing, not a lot of detail in the art, but I'm intrigued. I'm hoping some people get punched in the face for treating the main girl like crap.

Ikujinashi No Spectator

Complete | yamamoto ataru | 2015 released

That was... a very odd story. Kind of cute, but definitely weird. I liked the second one more because there was no rape in it. I like elements of the first one, but nonconsent isn't erased by future consent, and it bugs me. But whatever, the author clearly has a thing for very odd love triangles. The manga treats some stuff too lightly, but what else is new when it comes to BL? It doesn't surprise me, but I still don't like it. Anyway, it was entertaining, and I did like some of the cute twists on certain tropes. Everyone was an asshole in the first story, so at least they were more likable in the second.

Shinju Bl

This is... really weird. I cry very easily, and I figured I was taking a risk here, but the stories are so quick and shallow that it doesn't have much of an impact. I gave it three stars so far, instead of two, just because the third story was actually kind of intriguing despite its silly premise. The first one's ending made me laugh out loud because it was so abrupt. They had an opportunity to make these stories powerful, but they really missed their mark. If Harada has a piece in here, it'll no doubt be awesome, but I don't know what to expect from here on out.
