Shounen No Kyoukai

Complete | akabeko | 2016 released

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!!! I just noticed this hasn't been updated in a year. Please, someone get back to translating it. This is the first Omegaverse manga that I've truly enjoyed. It doesn't brush over horrible things like rape, and it sets up how hard and depressing this dystopian kind of world is. The love between the main two is so touching, and there's no expectation on the seme's part. The fated pair thing is a complication, but I hope that ultimately they're able to overcome it and stay together. This manga made me cry, and I just love how raw and sad it is, without being totally hopeless. I so rarely actually like the main pairing in omegaverse stuff, but this is perfect. So it really sucks that I'm stuck trying to decipher the partially uploaded, untranslated scans in the meantime. Not fair. ETA: Ugggghhhh, so sad! I'm totally crying. I want them to all be happy and stay with the ones they love! This is gonna kill me. It seems like they're all gonna break up. But I hope they can fight fate. Ugh, please update soon. I have to know what happens. Maybe we'll luck out and get another chunk of updates, chapter 9 and on. Edit: Noooooooo! How is chapter nine even more painful? I mean, obviously it will just get worse from here, but I don't think my heart can take this. I appreciate that someone is translating it at all, but the pause between chapters is killing me. I'm so scared that this isn't going to end the way that I'm hoping. I don't even know what to think. EDIT: Taiga, quit being a little bitch. EDIT: This manga hurts my heart in all the right ways. I've been sobbing this entire time. Totally thrilled that there's more, but man, that is definitely painful. Still, I have hope for them. Even if the memories never come back, hopefully he'll be able to start gaining new ones again eventually. EDIT: UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGHHHHHHHHH, MY HEART! DX I'm over here sobbing. This is so beautiful. I love this manga so fucking much. It hurts in all the right ways, and it ends on a beautiful and hopeful note. Absolute perfection. Thank you so much to the scanlator, man! I could have ended up never reading this amazing story.

Kokoro Kikai

Complete | Yumeka Sumomo | 2005 released

Too short, but a sweet little snapshot. Had it been a full manga, I think it might have been pretty great, even though it had that "it's okay if it's you" air about it, which is the trope I hate most next to "rape to love." I'd like to see more things focusing on depression and mental health, guys getting through it together as friends or more. But since it was so short and didn't dive into it much, I had to give it three stars.

Mic and Neo

Complete | Aniya Yuiji | 2000 released

I was torn between four stars and five until the ending. It was so sweet, so I had to go with five. Beautiful art as always, and the mangaka sure has her little kinks that seem to pop up a lot. She loves two moles on the uke, a seme with memory loss, and lack of communication of feelings causing issues, lol. But her work is great, and she never uses nasty tropes like rape to love, so her little quirks are fine by me. I actually guessed the twist right at the beginning (in a general sense) but I got so caught up in the story that I actually forgot and got surprised. XD That's the sign of a good manga. This isn't my absolute fave by her for a few reasons, but I did really enjoy it. She's quickly becoming one of my favorite mangaka.

Maki-chan wa Kare to Sex Shitai

Complete | TOMOCHI | 2017 released

The way people were acting, I thought this was going to have a sad ending, but it was perfect! THIS is what I want. This is the hurt/comfort that I crave! Why can't there be more yaoi like this? Where the seme loves and protects his uke, and the harm comes from some other piece of crap? There's no force or rape to love or any of that garbage. Just real emotion. Plus, for me it's the psychology of trauma and the character working through it that draws me to violence and rape in manga, so it makes me sad that so often rape is romanticized or treated like a firm handshake. This was exactly what I was looking for. The beginning was a bit clumsy and rushed, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was very happy with where it went. I imagine people are freaking out because the rape was so graphic and the character actually had a realistic reaction to being assaulted, but the tags *did* say there was rape, and every chapter had a warning for violence, etc. So why are 90% of the comments people bitching about it? If you're a delicate person, skip stories that say that they contain violence and rape. At any rate, I really enjoyed this one, and it's the embodiment of my list, "Rape that Doesn't End in Love."

The Fifth Encounter

Ongoing | Dual82 | 2018 released

Aw, I want more! Only two chapters so far, but I like the art, and I like the way the character tries to pretend like he isn't there to help this kid. Though it's a bit of a contradiction that he won't let the girlfriend take important things of sentiment because he wants to be surrounded by his brother's stuff, but he told the thief he could take anything he wanted. Oh well, logic. But seriously, I hope this updates soon.

Keyring Lock

Complete | ymz | 2000 released

This was so pretty! And I really enjoyed the story, even though I'm bummed that there wasn't even a kiss. They had these little intimate moments, but it was always shrouded in the strange relationship between them, like you couldn't call it romantic or anything. I know that they care about one another, and there's the implication that they're dating after the girl at the coffee shop asks, but it would have been nice to see a little affection. It's sort of an odd story, but it's interesting. I would have liked to have seen more, and I feel like a lot is left unexplained, but not in a plot hole kind of way. I'm gonna read all of this author's work, though, because it's so beautiful. Hopefully the stories are this quality or better.

Oniisan to Yobinasai

Complete | Matsuda Usachiko | 2000 released

"You're not an old man???" That... is that supposed to be a compliment? Does this guy look super wrinkly and decrepit and I'm just not seeing it? Anyway, this isn't bad. It could have been more powerful, but I did like the little parallel at the end. Not a fan of the older uke/younger seme thing, and an underage seme at that, but otherwise, it was all right.

Soine Lovers

Complete | Iimo | 2017 released

This is a strange set of stories in that one of them is super cutesy and one of them is about child rape. But okay, whatever works for you, author. The first story is really sweet, so I rated this a four based on that story alone. The others were probably more like a three, partly because they didn't always have a natural flow from one major moment to the next. I hate stories about clones because the concept of replacing someone with a duplicate is depressing to me. Like, does the person you loved originally not even matter anymore? There's an episode of Black Mirror that touches on this very well. It's soul-crushing but it's very reflective of the issues behind the concept of creating a copy of someone. Overall, not the worst thing I've ever read. There are some weird things in the stories that don't fit, for me, but I did like elements of all of the stories included, so hey.
