Sovi's plans was to have a heir and perfect empress. When they were kids he accidentally gave Nav a poisonous cookie which causes side effect of infertility that was meant for someone else. If Sovi doesn't have an heir soon, his cousin would take the throne. Nav is infertile and he's worried about the empire. He meets Trashta and decides for her to become a concubine.
When Trashta is pregnant Sovi nags Nav to adopt the kid to secure the bloodline and for the kid to get the crown bc a concubine's kid can't become the heir unless its get adopted by the empress/queen. But bc Nav won't adopt the unborn kid, Sovi makes a plan: Nav and make Trashta empress for a year so that the child claims a royal right. Then when that year ends, he takes Nav back and kicks Trashta out. Sovieshu loves Navier but he won't realize it until he loses her.
Sovi ends up mentioning his plan to Trashta (1-year empress trial). But, Navier was actually listening to their conversation. After, Nav leave the palace where she bumps into Heinley. Heinley confesses that he needs a queen to stand by him in his kingdom and he wants Nav to be queen. Nav then offers marriage and he accepts but is confused because she's still married.
Nav continues sending letters to the blue bird and Sovi takes notice of this. Thinking she's communicating with Heinley he orders to kill any bird that goes near the empress's chambers. *blood, feathers, and all* Sovi even sends a bird stew to Nav as warning The bird doesn't die though, because Duke Elgy saves the bird and becomes the means of communication between Nav and Heinley.
Trashta doesn't want to be compared to Nav so Duke Elgy suggests for her to study and learn about the throne and its job. At some point, Trashta also hires assassins to kill Nav's parents. Then Nav's brother attempts to poison Trashta to kill her child. He ends up being punished by Sovi for it. Sovi then uses Nav's brother's crimes as leverage in order to strengthen the divorce.
On the day of the divorce, Sovieshu embarrasses Navier and claims she tried to harm his kid. The High Priest is present in order to conclude the divorce. This is when Heinley enters as Navier asks the High Priest to bless her second marriage. Sovi is mad and locks Nav, her family, and Heinly in their house while he searches for any laws that could null and void Nav's second marriage. The blue bird appears to save Heinley, Nav, and the rest. Sov goes crazy and demands to find them.
When Nav leaves, Sovivieshu goes paranoid because he felt she really wasn't coming back. So he doesn't drop Trashta from the empress seat because he put a lot of effort into doing it (faking Trashta's noble background, etc.) but he does question whether their daughter is his or not. He uses magic to clarify the paternity; he was scared because he made so many enemies by divorcing Nav just to have an heir so there's no way he could save his dignity as emperor. It'll also shatter his reassurance that he isn't sterile because Nav is now pregnant with Heinley's child bc they did it on some magical bed which is why she got pregnant. He prayed it really was his because he couldn't bear to live with the knowledge that he lost Navier for nothing.
Trashta doesn't know who that father is bc she slept with the viscount's son and Sovi. At some point she gets a scar on her face and Sovi starts to lose interest in her.
It's revealed that Duke Elgy has only been getting information from Trashta. By Heinley's request, he got close to Trashta and got her to borrow money from him and some shit. Everything Trashta did, he told Heinley. So Trashta's crimes are brought to light and she's imprisoned. Somehow she ends up killing herself. Sovi rejects the bastard child and has no heir to the throne.
Nav and Heinly live happily ever after in his kingdom.
