Heartless
This manga made such an impression on me that I even had nightmares about it. Nothing and no one is at it appears on the surface in this story of an incubus, his lover and the cult hunting them down. Opening with a rape revenge fantasy involving the beautiful androgynous monster, demon and human are forever on the run from from human society. Story is an open indictment of Christian zealots and missionaries who have perverted the faith and have no relationship with “God”. Their cruelty and hypocrisy is unparalleled as they move to annihilate anything considered deviant by their Leader. Manuel represents humanity, and our struggle between right and wrong, God and Devil, which isn’t that clearly defined. God, who’s everywhere, has ongoing relationship with the Devil that seems more like old compatriots sparring with each other rather than arch enemies, as they argue over Manuel’s fate. The Devil is selfish and lonely, and needs his human, but he’s a tragic misunderstood outcast who originally had good intentions and a safe place to express that with his gifts.
Haru ni Kaeru
1st (horror, psychological) and 3rd (folktale, horror) one-shots are really excellent. Other ones are forgettable.
