masaki's abuse towards chiaki isn't excusable, but he shows it's cus violence was the only way he understood people would listen to him/stay (while he also realized it made people afraid, hence leading him to think of himself as a monster) -- that's why this story is cute cus it's two people who are realizing that they're human too and learning to be better/learning how to accept love/realizing that they're worthy of it
