Gosh! Obake Ga Boku Wo Penpen Naguru!

It is a promising manga. The first chapter had only 10 pages but surprisingly I was laughing instead of feeling the spookiness of the characters. Chapter 2 had its moments of dark comedy but the mangaka is quite good at creating a realistic gloomy horrifying atmosphere. Still anticipating more updates!

Lovesick Dead

Complete | ITOU Junji | 2000 released

This was a compelling 4-chapter oneshot. It simply grabbed my attention from start till end. My theory about A-Kun (pretty boy) is that he got possessed by the spirit of his half-sibling, the unborn baby as a form of setting the record straight against his father who is to blame for the state his mistress was driven to. Of course, Ryuusuke Fukata got caught in it because of the guilt he was suffering from due to his role in the past incident which is related the the mistress and her unborn child.

Itou Junji had some interesting ideas for his plots but the "thriller" element was mild. All the stories revolve around the lead female character's adventures as she get wrapped in new supernatural situations. If you're a fan of the supernatural genre, you're gonna love it but if you'd rather read something with a strong horror dose, this manga might not be for you.

Goth

Complete | Otsuichi | 2003 released

Warning: Discretion advised, highly disturbing content, not suitable for sensitive persons. Goth is the story of two teenagers who are attracted to murder and torture, hence the name "Goth". Morino and Kamiyama may share the same attraction towards morbid situations but they aren't the same: Morino is attracted to the pain and the suffering which precede the act of killing, whereas Kamiyama is attracted to killing itself. They both have psychopathic tendencies with no sense of remorse or guilt, except maybe for Morino. The guilt which consumes her however isn't linked to her desire to see other people in pain but to a secret which she harbors. They both hide their own secrets. I believe however that Kamiyama is the most dangerous out of the two because he is an active psychopath whereas Morino is a passive one. They are not lovers but there is a delicate balance between the two generated by their complicity, which in its turn is created by the fact that they are almost attracted to the same thing. This balance might at some point break if the tables are turned on Morino, if she becomes a passive prey instead of being a passive predator. As a work of art, Goth is a very decent one. It has one major flaw though, it lacks a clear point of view despite the fact that this manga's theme is sadly a factual one: each society generates its own number of serial killers and psychopaths.

I did laugh after reading this but it is such a weird story, though the author is trying to convey a point of view which was thought of smartly: "how existence is made?", "what is the smallest particle in the universe?". Now, I am thinking like the male lead in this oneshot! Okay hubby, this is yet another sleepless night, let's have sex :D .
