Why Is it You?

Complete | Nansae | 2000 released

22.8.2020 - 2.9.2020 At chapter 47, I’m still waiting for Owen and J to be true seke, but that’s just me and my head. Ch 48 Well, they came CLOSE, but in the end it was still done ”like normal”. But I’ll give them bonus points for at least trying. Ch 50 Finally. As in FRIKKING FINALLY! Owen got to be on top, and Jordyn really liked it. Finally I can actually write the tag ”seke” on one of the ’toons I’ve read, and by now I’ve read about 400 or so.

Yasashii Anata...

Complete | NISHIDA Higashi | 2015 released

25.8.2020 If this was a typical yakuza trope yaoi, I for one didn’t feel like it was anything more than a Romeo x Juliet type of drama. Because of yakuza reasons (read: assault for one and fraud for the other) they both got sent to the same prison to serve a one year sentence. In the last, extra, chapter they are reunited on a coffee date, still nervous and in love.

Legs That Won't Walk

Complete | 흑살구, Black Apricot | 2020 released

10.9.2020 The protagonist in this story is a young(ish) man with a leg injury that came from him being a boxer. So far in the story (ch 17) life has really dealt him a shitty hand: his old lover since his high school graduation has suddenly turned into one who does domestic violence and rapes him in bed, and apparently his dad ran foul of some korean mafia debt collectors. There’s a lot of dark things happening, and so far no character is either white or black but instead all sorts of grey. His new boss, who’s attracted to him, kinda goes berserk on the old lover, and one of his ’new coworkers’ is just really yandere. I want to know what’ll happen next, but so far this is Korean version of a yaoi yakuza-rape trope. 24.4.2024 ch 92 The yakuza finally offers to help our boxer get his leg fixed.

Yuki to Matsu

Complete | TAKAHASHI Hidebu | 2016 released

24-25.10.2020 The story of how the traditional medicine doctor found a half-dead yakuza hitman in the snow, and took him home and patched him up. Thus begins a love triangle between the doctor (Matsuo), the hitman/former kaitama (Tatsuo, kaitama means male prostitute) and the second in command of the yakuza gang (only called Aniiki or ”big brother”). The story goes all the way up to when Tatsuo/now Yuki and Matsuo are both old men, proving how they stayed together their whole lives. As a historical depiction of possible pre-Meiji era male lovers (before 1870) and all the possible drama they could encounter, I think it’s fairly accurate. Tea house brothels, people’s lives being mostly about how to get food on the table, farming, ”crude” medicine and class segregation. Oh mai gawd, does Yuki and Matsuo’s relationship revolve around them sitting and eating together. And talking, and misunderstanding, and having both stupid and important fights, and realizing how much they’ve fallen for one another. Their love is both raw, forgiving and a bit comedic. There’s also two other couples depicted: a farmer and his lady love, and the Aniiki and his lover Ruyo. The art starts out depicting things very shounen ai, but then evolves gradually into more yaoi.
