ReviewRaptor's manga / #Unexplained Happenings(93)

Conrad-YA Edition

Ongoing | Hongye | 2019 released

This reads like some cringey af teenager firstime story. From the late 80s or 90s. WTF. XD Hard pass. It's rushed, the art is really not my thing and the writing is just lackluster.

Duchess of the Glass House

Ongoing | 공기알 | 2021 released

I'm really starting to get tired of these types of webtoons. It's not the story, it's the fact that someone picked up this novel and tried to turn it into a comic all while leaving out MAJOR parts and important hints as to what is backstory, what is current timeline and what makes a story immersive anyway. If you need a text page of sentences that explains wtf is going on: You're doing a shit job. People, if you cannot put in the time and effort (and DON'T KNOW how to turn text into comic format) then please for the sake of anything ever holy: Do not do it. This is neither a nice read nor does it make me want to read the novel, if anything, it pretty much makes me stay clear of it if I would suspect that THIS is what the contents and skill level in terms of writing would be what awaits me... Granted the plot is really...dumb. I mean, the author could have put some logical thinking into the reason as to why the girl is hated. How the flying purple fuck is she supposed to be resonsible for her mother's death if she wasn't the one to make the horses freak or manipulate the carriage?? WTF. (Unless it was the comic team that decided to change this part to how dumb it now is, which I've seen people do before, for some fucking reason.) Either way, the plot is not interesting enough nor is the execution of it being turned into a comic in any way pleasant. I've lost all interest and a lot of patience with this. I'm out. Enjoy if you can endure this lackluster, hole-filled storytelling. But I'm not gonna bother with this shit.

Love Jinx

Complete | Geonhan,건한 | 2020 released

(Only spoiler part would be the general issues as well as mentioning the supposed love interest's personality...it's not really spoiling anything, so no tag) The setup for the story was really interesting but...the writing is a bit of a mess. One happening after another keeps being thrown at you. Before you can deal and settle with one, another one is thrown at you. Making the pacing feel extremely rushed and a bit lackluster at times even. Characters aren't introduced properly (if at all) either, they are thrown at you just the same. No names, personality or general sense of what you should feel for them is being portrayed and keeping on reading doesn't yield any quick solution for all these important factors either. All in all you're being bombarded with info while reading and left to figure it out yourself/piece it together. If this was about some kinda mystery plotpoint, sure: That would be fine and would work perfectly. But for character relations as is here? It's just a bit of a throw-off, rips you out of what little immersion there is and makes this just a mess of a read and not enjoyable if you're looking for detailed/intricate writing or storytelling. The story's base plot is interesting, the MC is very likable to boot, but the pacing and storytelling issues cause me to loose interest at chapter 8 already. Too much trouble that simply outweights the little that I could call a reward if I would keep on reading. (The love interest's personality is VERY off putting by the way. He's giving me psycho, rape-y AND general yandere vibes: All of which I despise, so that's a major reason to fuck off away from this if nothing else...) I can neither say this is bad nor good. Nor can I recommend it or say people absolutely shouldn't read it. It depends on your preferences and what level of writing you are used to and looking for, I suppose. Check it out, but I honestly can't say this is something I'd ever mention to anyone if they asked me for a story to read. :/

Charming and the Beast

Ongoing | Wilbright | 2000 released

The plot is basic just like the characters. You're not introduced to the world at all and just constantly get things thrown at you out of the blue. The characters have barely any personality and aren't interesting enough to hold my interest. Just like the story itself. The art is on the lower end compared to most webtoons. Anatomy is funky at times and ugly in many shorts. I give them points for at least trying to draw the backgrounds and the horses themselves even, we rarely get to see that, but that's about all I can point out as good...which naturally isn't enough to keep me reading.

Beware of the Villainess!

Ongoing | 뽕따맛스크류바,푸른칸나,Bbongdda mask ,Pureunkanna | 2019 released

The art is lovely but that's about it. The MC has SUCH an obnoxious personality, wtf. The story seems to have some heavy feminazi tendencies because the male characters have literally only the vibes of: man bad, so man do random things that come across as trigger points for anyone that wants to find something to be angry at. There is so little logic to all of this that it baffles me tbh. And the fun thing is: Instead of being the nice person she SUPPOSEDLY WAS IN HER PREVIOUS LIFE, she acts like a dam fuckwit right about any second. What the actual hell. Wasn't the goal to NOT act like a villainess? Then why verbally attack your own father and brother as well as the crown prince (who seems to have the spine of an eel and the authority of a worm as well as the awareness of one..). This is a clusterfuck at best. The writing is bad and random at many times and the characters are nearly all obnoxious as hell. I'll nope the fuck outta this one, this is just unbearable unless you're one of those that think a female acting like a shithead towards males is 'good writing of a strong female lead' (words which have lost all meaning on this website by now for sure btw). I'm out. This was such a waste of time. FFS.

I am the Precious Daughter of the Greatest Villain in the Fantasy World

Ongoing | Solddam | 2021 released

The plot is nice, the art okay but the characters are really basic. Sadly the plot is so full of wholes and throws tons of "surprise, this stuff is actually like that or THIS happened while we randomly skipped over it, haha!" happenings at you...it's just not good. The people who made this probably tried to turn a novel into a comic but thought it would be okay to skip all explainations and detailwork...which is not okay. Reading footnotes to understand something is the worst idea to go about this sorta thing. It makes everything seem lackluster or really half-assed and just doesn't throw a good light onto the original work (IF there is one, I'm honestly not interested enough to check). All in all the execution isn't good. It was okay at first but around the later parts (maybe anywhere from ch 15 to 26, I honestly don't remember when it started) things just become obnoxious and confusing. It doesn't help that things feel horribly rushed atop of lack of explainations. It's really just not enjoyable to read. ALSO... I'm honestly finding some things VERY forced. I don't really care about their age at this point, but the 'reasons' for the apparent male lead to fall for the MC (which are literally zero, it's just random 'this is like that now, deal with it') is just really pure bs writing. If you're gonna make them fall in love...at least give some rhyme or reason to it, let it take some time. Not just the horribly shoujo-bs idea of: Aw, girl nice to me, me now love girl! hurrhurr

Untouchable Lady

Ongoing | Kin,Minsoong,Yongdusik | 2021 released

The logic is honestly all over the place and some parts of the writing is really lackluster (the fathers mental issues that tie to his daughter, most of all) but the pacing is quite off almost like the writer didn't quite know what to talk about first/how to sequence it. The art is lovely and the basic story is interesting enough to read it, but it could really need some work in other departments. Another issue I find is the constant 'this happened but we didn't tell you yet' stuff, it feels really off and after a while very much like the author is really new to story telling given that things are only thrown at you and somewhat explained when the plot requires it instead of having a careful set-up and introduction or really just good sequencing. Not sure if I'll ever like the MC enough, she's a bit bland but I hope things will get better with time. Tho then again all characters are a bit bland, except the psycho...not sure if I'm happy about that.

A Grand Ambition

Complete | 운태 | 2000 released

Goddamn, the pacing of this is just throwing me all over the place and back. XD Until chapter 3 it felt like it was the start of a story, chapter 3 felt like it was gonna rush us to a certain situation (it REALLY felt like some dark shit was around the next corner, ngl) and then BAM, chapter 4 smacks you in the face with rushed progress that's like someone telling you a quick recap of what the story was gonna be like. And then it's over. It feels SO unfinished. And it had lots of potential too, so that was really a shame. I'd have loved to read more. ;v; Anyway, the MC has a lovely personality and I would've liked to see more of him. The seme however...I'm really not a fan of his personality. He was borderlining psycho territory before going back to a random, basic wholesome guy we see every other manga/webtoon. It was just weird and felt a little off. Not sure about the side-dude, but thanks to him all of this feels even more like a storyboard rather than a fully written/developed story. Like, you SHOULD know more about each character but you simply don't and hence you have that feeling of hanging in the air as the story ends. It could have been MUCH better for sure, but as is: It's an okay read. Nothing severe, nothing too basic. The art is nice too, extra points for that~.

A Way To Protect The Lovable You

Ongoing | Hound,Kim ji-ee,Han Yujeong | 2021 released

The baseplot is absolutely amazing, super interesting setup and interesting characters (albeit some are a little bland here and there) but sadly this all looses it's charm due to the storytelling of the webtoon itself. I'm not sure if this is based on a novel (they usually are) and if or if not the novel is better written but...this webtoon feels like one of those that have been just too rushed by a team that doesn't quite know what can and cannot be rushed. If I had to boil it down, this feels like a comic drawn by someone that was told a quick summary of events by another person that read a novel. Then, said comic artist was left with a few instructions and the summary and told to go make a comic out of this...which sadly lacks a ton of things that make a story loose the story telling part nearly entirely or coherrent in some cases even, but all in all more like a recollection re-telling. Sometimes it even feels like the creation process went a bit like "Oh hey, and this happened between that and that, so you gotta squeeze that in over there.". And that's saddening to me, because the story has MAJOR potential with being so interesting and something filled with tragedy and potentially a lot of wholeheartedness. ;v; I actually think instead of reading this webtoon, checking out the novel might yield a better read. If you don't care much for flow and pacing and having a comic be more of a summary, then I suppose this will be a good read for you still. But I honestly think that in written form this definitely will be better (again, IF these faults aren't present in the novel too, that is). I would stick around but I'm not really into this type of writing as it is, too much is being rushed and thrown into the middle. It's not really enjoyable to me personally. So I'll see if I can sometime find the novel and give that a shot. You guys enjoy the webtoon if it's to your liking tho, the baseplot and art are definitely gonna be treat till the end, I'm sure!
