Hana Ni Kuchizuke

Complete | abe akane | 2015 released

I'm not usually big on cross dressing in Yaoi, but this story handled it well. I could easily see where, in a society that discriminates against homosexual couples, dressing like a girl would be convenient. Yet, I never got the sense that Hana was unhappy being a gay male. He took advantage of his slight frame and feminine features to make his way in the world without diminishing his maleness. Even a coworker at the Male Cheerleader club had a girlfriend. Maybe it was the Kansai ben, but he always "felt" male to me. I liked that most about this story. That, and the fact that he didn't hide his cross dressing, rather he and his partner both embraced it, made this story better than most dealing with cross dressing.

Bond(z)

Complete | touko kawai | 2003 released

This is a collection of stories focusing on how the homophobia of society effects young gay men. The pain and confusion of being told that the love you feel is somehow wrong or bad and the repercussions those feelings of pain and have on the men who feel them and their partners. Beautifully written, as is expected of this mangaka.

New Beginnings

Complete | YAMAMOTO Kotetsuko | 2005 released

Very sweet story with wonderful artwork. The pacing is very realistic and the characters are well written. I'll admit it was a bit hard to get through, for me. Maybe because I know that this is not how things usually work out. Gay men who are attracted to straight men usually just end up hurt.
