Novel end: They split up (in the maenok world) after he happens to see a man's face on one of her cellphones; he got jealous and angry, thinking she has another man (because she's always secretive about the cell phone use/purpose, etc.). In his fit, he basically threw her out of town or wherever they were. But he can't handle being without (because he loves her) and she still needs him to survive, so they get back together relatively quickly. She explains to him about what cellphones are and why she has no idea who the guy in the picture on the phone is (because it's some otherworlder's phone, not her original phone). So they get back to their co-dependant relationship status. They even start preparing for marriage, but on like the day before (or maybe even the day of the wedding) the FL gets "cold feet" when she thinks about their relationship dynamics and power imbalance. She takes everything (including falsified identity documents ML got for her, money, etc.) and runs away. They spend a few years apart, she makes her own life as a live-in server at a restaurant, he becomes personal guard of the new pope. Wouldn't you know it, the pope and his guards come around to that very restaurant and although both look a bit different FL recognizes ML on sight. ML doesn't say anything when he sees her, so she thinks he doesn't recognize her. She tries to just let the past go. Later that night, she answers a knock on her bedroom door and ML is like "it's been a while. thanks for letting me in" and brushes past her and walks into the room. He gets upset (kinda understandably) about her stealing everything and running off. He's angry at her for it, and at himself for loving a deceitful thief who only hurts him. Once again, he thinks she has left him for another man (his reasoning is that she is ultimately powerless, and knows how dangerous the world is. There's no way she would've tried to face the world alone, so she must've left because she found another man who could protect her.) Of course, FL denies this and tries to explain that, no, she didn't leave for another man, and that the reason she had to leave was because she couldn't stomach being married with their relationship as it was. He doesn't believe her, because her reasoning makes no sense to him at all; He's convinced that she left him, got with another man, and started a family. To prove himself correct, he forcefully checks the skin of her lower stomach, because he'd heard that women who gave birth have stretch-marks. Her stomach is flat and skin is smooth. ~~ Chapters and chapters later they eventually marry and have kids. As far as I know they never go through any portal, or back to the FL's original world.
