Sleeps In Sunbeams's manga / #childhood friends(221)

Bokurani Matsuwaru Etc

Complete | kyuugou | 2008 released

I shed a few tears in that baseball story, it was so beautifully written. I also really enjoyed the age gap story, the older guy had such a great angry face and both MCs were drawn so well! I have to send a big thumbs up to the translator and editor, the translation went above and beyond with the accent and there were no jarring moments of poor grammar

Tonari No Usotsuki

Complete | Nomo Marino | 2001 released

Two interconnected stories where love wins in the end despite stubborn heads. Enjoyable, worth a read.

Mad Cinderella

Complete | YAMAMOTO Kotetsuko | 2011 released

One of my favourite stories, mostly because despite any of the dramas (like being kidnapped, others interfering or falling for them, their quarrels), there is never any doubt of the love and devotion between Saku and Ryouta. I also absolutely adore their parent’s supportive attitude and understanding towards their love; so rare in yaoi or shounen-ai but so well done here. Always worth a re-read!

Kiss Blue

Complete | Kinoshita Keiko | 2006 released

A love story of friends to lovers. The thing is, the seme was such a womanising playboy that even with a happy ending the uke will never be comfortable trusting his lover. Understandable given his history of two and even three timing on his girlfriends. Idk, I find that rather sad. I kind of liked the flirty manager more, he had a kindness to him that was appealing under that flirty exterior. I was sad to see he had his own unrequited love story and impressed with his maturity in dealing with the guy he loved (like making sure he prioritised his family and not drinking around him to avoid any “blame it on the alcohol” moments).

Junjou Mistake

Complete | Nakamura Shungiku | 2008 released

A great story, these guys share a devotion to each other that spans decades and they still manage a cute, flustered blush. Adorable.

Seinen 14 Sai

Complete | Yamada Yugi | 2000 released

So many wonderful stories and beautiful BL. Yamada Yugi has a talent at story telling and creating funny scenes and dialogue. The sad story at the end had me in tears, but there was sweetness in that too. Recommended.

Neko no Koi

Complete | shimaji | 2009 released

Two good stories to read, though I prefer the first one for their long lasting care of each other. The thing that bothered me with Ryo and his uncle was how he forced himself on his drunk uncle and even at the end, seemed to not care about hurting him (and the uncle was definitely not a masochist). At the very least there was a degree of dubious consent which is something I am never a fan of.

Ikujinashi no Kimi ni Sasageru

Complete | Mishima Kazuhiko | 2000 released

Such a sweet pair, these two have loved each other for so long I just couldn’t imagine them ever looking at another.

Suki no Mebae

Complete | yukimura | 2005 released

I was a little hesitant reading this story as there were a few negative comments about the uke being bratty and spoilt or clueless and irritating, but I have to totally disagree. Far from being spoilt, Keisuke was pretty much a victim of his brothers physical and verbal abuse (the older sibling struggled with taking on a father role after their dad died). If he wasn’t being hit or yelled at, he was hiding from his mum and brother fighting. It was so distressing for him he ran away from home. Fortunately this consisted of staying with his brother’s childhood friend, Hisashi, who was kind and gentle and who had fallen for this boy when he was merely 13. When Hisashi finally shared that he had “dangerous” feelings for Keisuke, Keisuke was very surprised and was a little confused as he started to recognise his own reciprocating feelings. I found all of this beautiful and his reactions totally relatable (especially given that he was only 16 or 17). I loved the intensity of how they eventually came together, the artwork was fantastic and the mangaka was a talented gem in portraying Hisashi’s passion and Keisuke’s nervous determination. Simply gorgeous! I also enjoyed the brothers story and hope that he will be ble to stop lashing out and simply relish being the important one to his new stepbrother.

At the End of the Road

Complete | Haribo | 2016 released

Outstandingly amazing, this webtoon was addictive reading. I loved almost everything, though my heart still breaks for poor Siwon...he was the true innocent and what he went through still brings me to tears. But, as for the MCs, their relationship seemed to be shaped by destiny. I love that both were strong, tough and protective of each other. I loved that their vulnerabilities were only seen by each other, and I loved that the uke was no pushover damsel in distress. This was one of those stories that stays in your head. I know I will be re-reading it many times.
