One of the sweetest and most romantic story involving yakuza theme! Two total strangers having a coincidental (but maybe fateful) meeting and falling madly in love with each other with the newfound freshness and excitement of two middle-school students but with a maturity befitting of the grown-up men they're. Unbeknownst of their actual identity, they experience the gentlemanly and romantic love they dreamt of, but they're inevitably soon faced with the reality when they find themselves facing off as enemies in a clash between two rival yakuza groups! However, that will not affect their true love that will prevail over everything else! Ahhh that was beautiful! So sweet and touching at the same time! I loved the reference to the 1950 "Mona Lisa" song all along the story and it really felt like I was watching a movie of a love story that was so beautiful and pure despite its violent background! A true gem...Definitely one of Nishida Higashi's best works!

A child's seemingly ordinary act of kindness became something of inestimable value to Matsuoka Sueji who was never treated as a human once in his life. That's why, Matsuoka never forgot about that child called Inose Azuma, who was the young son of his former employer, and a decade later he visits him and his sick mother to return the favor... (()) Beautiful story with a precious essence. I loved how that small child's kindness moved Matsuoka so profoundly to then commit himself with his whole self to be there for him when the time would come for Azuma to be in a difficult situation. Even if he took a questionable path (he became a loan shark), everything he did was for that sole purpose...he'd do anything for him and that's touching! After facing the violent side of Matsusoka's lifestyle, Azuma still chose to be beside him and accept him completely. That ultimately lead Matsuoka to want to change for the better! As we saw in the end, after some years, he and Azuma returned to the countryside and he was hired in a regular job. P.S. Exactly because it was an ordinary kind act and he was still a child, Azuma actually didn't remember about their first encounter. Then, at the end of ch. 4, he finally remembers it and realizes that Matsuoka was that boy...that was truly a beautiful moment!

୧••୨ Miyoshi Ayato's first period piece...overall, it was not bad. I quite liked it! Although I feel it could have been executed a lot better! Especially the flow / development of the story was a bit weird for me. Compared to some other works of sensei, this was clearly a bit inferior... Btw, she said she really wanted to make Arima and Kuroki's sister Kikuko marry...thankfully that didn't happen! Well, Kuroki still tried to make them marry, to somehow have a link with him, but thankfully Arima refused. Otherwise that would have been so cruel, nothing good would have come out of it! All three would have been unhappy and miserable! In the end, Kuroki: "I came to a realization on my own that I wanted to take your hand...even if I had to throw my family and society away...I was thinking that all the while I..." - It's kinda sad that he needed an earthquake to finally be honest about what he really wanted and also take the decision to step down from head position, but well...all is well that ends well! #Taisho Era, Reunion of School Friends, 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake, Count / Head of a Noble House x Uni Medical Student
