They were good friends as children but forced to separate since they will eventually fight for the throne. A is secretly an Ω, who are ineligible for the throne. And B is an α who is attached to (in love with) B with no desire to rule. A is now plotting to put B on the throne behind his back to protect him and keep his mother out of power. His mother had gone to great lengths to keep this secret and is feared by most, including the emperor, but it is slowly killing A, hence why he is turning away from her.
