The ML has lived numerous lives and has gone back in time each time. He has met the FL multiple times, and this time he wants to keep her from dying. She is the "promise" that will save the world from the "catastrophe", and every time she died while fullfilling that prophecy. The ML is particulary traumatised by his last life, because he teached her magic and swordsmanship in order to make her stronger so she would survive, but in the end she resented him for turning her into someone who could protect anything but didn't have anything to protect. So in this life, he asked her to marry him in hope that he could make her happy.

[SPOILERS] The FL was reincarnated as Cayena, the villainess from a novel she likes. She always felt close to that character because they were both used by men to scheme and hurt others. Now living as Cayena, she wants to be free, and to that end she is trying to put Cayena's brother, Rezef, on the throne. Rezef was raised without affection, so his personality is a bit twisted, but he melts under his sister's affection. The old Cayena was in love with duke Raphael Kedrey, but the FL is trying to earn his trust by helping him getting out of his engagement. Raphael has some childhood trauma and dislikes being touched, which Cayena is very cautious about. Duke Heinrich is the head of a branch of the imperial family which cannot claim the throne. He holds hostage the emperor's concubine and their son as a way to obtain the throne. The emperor told Raphael that Rezef is not his son. Raphael and Cayena kissed (ch.81).

God asked her a riddle and she keeps reincarnating as long as she doesn't find the answer. It's something about love, probably that she must learn how to love. In her last reincarnation, she was an acquaintance of the empress, who died without an heir and named her empress in her will. So she ruled the country, and when she died she died, she passed the throne to the Duke. She has now been reincarnated as that Duke's (now emperor) daughter (so as a princess). Apparently there is also another being, forgotten by God, who hates her.
