The heroine, Teresse, is from a poor noble family, she basicaly lives like a commoner but she has education and ambition : she wants to land a job as a court lady in the palace in ordre to secure income for her family (to reinstaure their fief and pay for her siblings' education). An knight, Jade, comes to her house to anounce that the selection for the new queen will start and that every girl of noble lineage is summoned to the palace and will stay there a month. The selection will be made by a magic ring that is supposed to react when it encounters someone who is queen material. Teresse sees in that a good opportunity, even though she doesn't want to be queen, since she will be given compensation and she might get a chance to proove that she is court lady material. She goes to the palace, various things happen (classic harem stuff), she becomes friends with Jade and with a commoner working as a bureaucrat, Riina. Jade and Riina help her in her studies. A flashback shows us that she met the prince when she was a child, while she was trying to save a fox from being drowned : he didn't give her his real name, and he didn't get a look at her face, so they both dont know who the other is. She forgot about the incident and he is looking for her, with the only clue being that the magic ring reacted to her. BUT she isn't chosen by the ring in the end, Riina is. And Jade is in love with Teresse.
