Neither of them remember that. But he spares her life when she is trying to save her father from execution. She trades her father's life, and medicine to save her stepmother who recently gave birth, for her own service to the emperor for the rest of her life. He begins her training to make her a better fighter and more knowledgeable. Gives her a sword with a mind of its own which chooses her as its wielder. The sword is tied to a dragon that comes and opens the demon world for her to train. Emperor pushes her into the demon world and they part ways for 3 years. She agrees to be the disciple of a wronged ex-general who has been imprisoned in the demon world. He agrees to pass his power on to her and help her survive in the demon world if she will follow his instruction and bring a jade pendant to his son in the living world when she returns. From a wise mantis in the demon world she learns knowledge about the world. Defends his power-enhancing, life-giving mushrooms while doing so. From a deceased, skilled actor in the demon world she learns to change her face and form. Flashbacks let us know that the emperors backstory was sad. We already knew that Lok Heun had a sad backstory from the opening when her mother was raped and killed, for which her father got revenge thus making him a fugitive.
