Kurihara is in a one-sided rivalry with Kawase, who Kurihara always takes 2nd place to. Kurihara's hostility toward Kawase causes them to argue. However, as Kawase notices Kurihara's deteriorating condition, caused by recklessly disregarding his own needs in order to study more, Kawase is worried and unable to leave Kurihara alone. When Kurihara, overwhelmed by another loss, finally breaks down, Kawase realizes he wants to support Kurihara by his side, hoping to see his smile.
