Masataka is the is the chief priest and caretaker at the shrine for God's spirit servants, lead by the 12 zodiac animals. Any animal that is one of God's servants can relax at the shine, but cats have never been welcomed. When Kotarou and the cat possessing him, Koma, show up to the shrine needing a place to stay after their own shrine burned down, Masataka, a cat lover, is happy to help them out. Though some of the zodiac animals need convincing.

Umeya meets his shy neighbor and classmate Sakura after finding Sakura's cat, Momoko. However, the apartment complex doesn't allow pet, so in return for letting Umeya visit Momoko, he'll keep quiet. While spending time with Sakura, Umeya can't help thinking Sakura is interesting. But when Sakura starts speaking negatively about himself, a drunk Umeya kisses him.

Widower Chigusa finds a small, dirty fluff ball on the street, and, after taking it home, he washes and feeds the strange creature, now named Kedama. The next morning, Chigusa wakes to find a human with cat ears and a tail, who is calling him master, instead of the small Kedama. Having experienced kindness for the first time, Kedama reveals he is a cat ghost and has taken human form in hopes of serving Chigusa and repaying his goodwill.

A month after the death of his grandfather, Haru decides to reopen the bakery they ran together. While visiting his grandfather's grave to inform him of the decision, Haru notices an undertaker-like man visiting another grave. Later that day, he notices the same man taking shelter from the rain outside of the bakery and invites him in, learning he is Shinonome from a grave visiting service. After allowing Shinonome to stay at his house, Shinonome becomes the bakery's new part-timer.
