Fxxking My Ex's New Lover
I enjoyed this one. I liked that there was actual communication rather than stupid miscommunications or misunderstandings. The hurdles the couple had to overcome were more real, stemming from understandable reservations, decisions the other made, and past trauma. The story’s conflict felt a lot more realistic and that makes a difference. The pacing was pretty good for a shorter comic and was generally well thought out.
Rent Boy
Wow this is one of the best stories I’ve read in a while. It’s so interesting on so many levels. Between the political intrigue, family drama, corruption, secrets, and lies is a boy from a rich family and a young rent boy who fall in love against the odds. And everything in their world seems to be conspiring to keep them apart. It is a story that feels very queer, which is not always true in the BL genre. These star crossed lovers have me on the edge of my seat rooting for them despite the odds. The pacing was pretty good until the end when it felt very rushed in the last two episodes. Wrapping up both the plot and how to resolve the star-crossed lovers story needed more time for it to feel complete. It was a very emotional and thematic ending that didn’t get the justice it deserved compared to the rest of the story. I enjoyed the story but was very frustrated by the ending and its unresolved emotions and story lines.
Waterside Night
It’s so fucked at the beginning but I gotta say the author is doing a great job with the redemption arc and the Taeju figuring out how wrong he was and trying to make it up to Euihyun. It’s one of the most interesting and well done redemption arcs I’ve seen. He’s still an asshole and a pervert, it’s not like his personality changed but he grew as a person to understand how to be a better person and understand his impact on others. This story is by no means perfect but I really enjoyed it. I wished Euihyun had gotten a bit more of a self-actualization arc outside of his relationship with Taeju. But I really enjoyed it and thought it was a good example of a redemption arc done right. One of the few BLs I’ve read where it actually delivered as satisfying redemption arc of “forgive but don’t forget.” I also just really liked the art and humor in this comic.
