Miscreants And Mayhem

Complete | Brothers without a tomorrow | 2019 released

I liked this story. despite the violence and murder and weird quasi-incest it was an interesting read. Gotta say the fact that they were father and son 15 years before and then become lovers is still weird and makes me a bit uncomfortable. But overall the story was good and the characterization was super strong. I think the plot was a bit confusing at times, especially toward the end it felt a little rushed and like there were things set up that didn’t get resolved. But I really like this author and think this is another good one.

Raising Beta

Ongoing | Shin yuri | 2022 released

Gotta say, kinda fucked up story, but the visual design and coloring are awesome. It’s a cool concept too, with the play on beta from omegaverse and beta fish in fish bowl. The art is just beautiful and it’s a well told story, you don’t find out how truly fucked up it is until the end when it turns out his friend orchestrated his bullying, his parents death, and his turning into an omega all to control him completely. But it’s also more complicated than some stories with manipulation and control as a theme since the main character does seem happy for right now even though he’s being controlled. Well written. Hmmm idk about my conclusion before, this guy just keeps getting worse and worse. On top of controlling everything about his partner and turning him into an omega against his knowledge or will and killing his parents, he also apparently assaulted him every night in his sleep before they were together.

Easy to Notice

Complete | Arecibo | 2019 released

This was so bad, so much set up and very little pay off. The shitty rich top guy never changes and yet the story pretends he has. He just manipulates and keeps things from the other guy for so long. I really disliked this and thought the storytelling was really bad.

Ok the first part of this story has been upsetting to read. Like watching a nice guy living his own life start to fall for this asshole CEO’s charade of courtship that he is only grudgingly putting on. It’s just awful hearing the internal monologue from the omega guy all hopeful about this nice friendly guy who he is meeting. And then you hear the internal thoughts of the alpha guy and he’s constantly saying how ugly, dumb, and arrogant the omega is, comparing him to a rat and planning how to manipulate him into having his child while knowing full well that his body is probably not healthy enough for that. It kinda makes my skin crawl, makes me want to yell at the omega to get out of there at any cost. I’m going to keep reading at least for now, I’m only 9 chapters in. Maybe it will get better but I am dropping the series if it doesn’t seem like the alpha guy changes and apologizes sincerely for how awful of a person he is being. By chapter 12 the shitty alpha’s true colors are coming out and thank god Haejin, the omega, is actually standing up for himself and reacting the way a rational person would to his insane requests. He sees the change in personality for what it is and hopefully won’t compromise. It’s gonna take a lot to redeem this alpha guy and I just hope the narrative follows through and doesn’t sweep it under the rug. So they have done a better job of redeeming him than I feared. After Haejin leaves and cleverly uses all his survival skills to escape into the forest (well set up as a consistent part of his personality btw), Hwan is distraught for weeks and clearly reevaluates some things. Unfortunately, we don’t see a lot of that actually happen. We see him be upset and rethink a couple things but the actual reflection and regret as reflected in his thoughts is missing. And once he reunites with Haejin, he apologizes generally but in my opinion doesn’t actually address the awful things he has done and the trauma he inflicted. Credit to the story, Hawjin doesn’t fully forgive him or let him forget what he did and how horrible of a person he was, he brings it up. This would be a great point for Hwan to reflect and apologize specifically for how he treated his bf in different ways. So I’m buying their redemption at about 65-70% of what I want it to be to be cathartic and satisfying as a narrative. Better than the 20% or 5% I feared that I’ve seen in others, but could be better with some easy changes. Also this is compartively minor but the baby at the end of the story is so much bigger than the should be. Not like she is older than makes sense, but the baby is like the size of a torso when being 3 months old and her head is the same size of an adult head. Also she can talk at 3 months? The author clearly doesn’t know anything about babies, which is not uncommon for comics like this that I’ve seen but it’s funny. Usually they draw the babies too small lol. After finishing it, it was very cute at the end, but I didnt feel it was entirely deserved. I think Haejin forgave his captor too quickly, being kidnapped and imprisoned and forced to get pregnant is something that would probably traumatize him for the rest of his life and even if he chooses to forgive his now husband, Hwan shouldn’t be allowed to forget he did all that. That said, it did hold him more accountable than some stories I’ve read, but that’s a low bar.
