Polaris no Rakuin
This was better than I thought it would be, though the fact that the seme didn’t need, like, a WHILE to process all his feelings at the end and just jumped into bed with the uke was a little unrealistic for me. Other than that, the plot and the setup were interesting. I didn’t love the characters (they were fine), but I didn’t need to love the characters in order to love the story.
Eyes speak more love than the mouth
I wish it had been a little longer and fleshed out their relationship more, rather than just putting an epilogue at the end. About the manga: it was so good! Both characters grew because of their interactions with each other. I especially loved how philosophical and self-aware the main character (the one hiding under a mask of happiness) was. He understood the flaws in his own personality and was receptive to the growth that he experienced due to his interaction with the love interest. Also, the love interest was a very kind person, and his bluntness was pretty great. Fujino and Mad-dog Tsukada seem like total opposites. One is a clean-cut smol bean, and the other is a large, scary fighter whose rumors are second to none with regards to his looks. One day, Fujino, who is fake towards other people because he is scared of being hurt again (by people in general), goes up to the rooftop only to find Tsukada, who says his smile is "shady." And it is shady -- he is fake because he doesn't want to offend people, but is shocked at getting called out by Tsukada. He ends up revealing more of himself to this person, who is unexpectedly kind, gentle, and polite despite all the rumors surrounding him. Then he started to blush after Tsukada said something to him, but freaks out after he guesses what it means. This is the story about a smol bean who wants love and kindness, but is too scared to get it through vulnerability, and a misunderstood and gentle 'delinquent.'
Ahiru no Oujisama (Kazao)
Truly a compilation of stories concerning characters who are generous and kind and nonjudgmental, traits society rarely spotlights but are worth more than their weight in gold.
At the End of the Road
This could have been more than it was, but it wasn’t. Summary: The main character has a very realistic dream that a kid is getting bullied but then wakes up. This boy (main character) is about to pay off his debt to his landlord (his parents ran away/died, and he's poor). The day before he pays off the debt in full, he wakes up...but he's not in his own body. Instead, he wakes up and is in that same kid's body (the same one he's dreamed of) who is in the hospital for a suicide attempt and is being released. This kid has a twin brother, who seems to hate him for some reason. His family is normal. He goes to school and realizes this kid is picked on and treated badly. This boy (who is a very strong character) is also very good at physically fighting. When he enters the body of this host and goes to school, the new character ends up beating up all the kids who bullied the former host, due to the fact that the new owner ignored them. To this kid's surprise (the new owner), a figure from his shadowy past is at this school (which is a richy rich private school). This kid from his past, who was also in the slums, is somehow now a wildly rich, wildly popular, wildly hot magnate heir. Once Shinwoo -- the current owner of the former bullied boy's body -- interacts with him, the hottie knows something's up. Through an obsession and a familiarity with Shinwoo, the rich kid figures it out -- and wants to become friends with this kid. Props for the whole unraveling of the mystery and the comeuppance the characters who bullied this boy (I remember feeling very satisfied when I read it) -- only, the ending was abrupt and the way they ended up playing out the reasons for this former character's demise was both unbelievable and highly improbable. There was so much tension and interest and drama at the beginning of the manga, only for everything to suddenly collapse on itself at the last chapter. This is an example of a plot that could have been good, only to fall apart on itself because of time constraints and the author's lack of knowledge of where to go with the plot next. It could really have been excellent; it ended up, instead, with being 'meh.' -- Mad-dog label gets introduced in chapter 9 because of chapter 8 ~Chapter 57.11
Naked Sword and the Tree Peony of Black
Kuroi-kun (yakuza extraordinaire) and his best on-and-off-again professed lover/friend Shirakaba (straight-rules lawyer) are running in circles around each other with Kuroi closing his ears as Shirakaba continues to confess his love to his gokudo crush (for more than 20 years). Kuroi also loves Shirakaba but doesn't want him to get involved with the yakuza, but Shirakaba does so anyway by becoming the family's lawyer (which Kuroi tries to protest by the silent treatment). Will this 30-year old love between these 37-year-olds finally be requited? ~Vol. 2, Chapter 1 (Chapter 6)
Kimi to Ishin Denshin!
A boy named Saika has supernatural abilities to hear people's thoughts, only to be wound into the cutesy drama of Yamada, the friend he makes because his thoughts are simply so loud. Yamada starts to fall in love with him, thanks to their closeness and the ease with which Saika understands him. Mostly because he feels comfortable with the honesty of Yamada's thoughts, Saika falls for him in the end. ~Chapter 6
Sakazuki-san Chi no Gikyoudai
Yesss their relationship is a mood!!! Plus, the fact that cute things weren’t seen as abnormal and weak was awesome. Summary: Two brothers (one short -- in high school -- and one tall -- in elementary school) bond over discovery of the other person. ~Chapter 25
