An Exclusive Contract
Omg… this is actually pretty good! I didn’t expect much from the ending, but as I read on, this isn’t just a slice-of-life, purposeless story after all. There’s humor and an unrealistic initial set-up, so of course I thought it’s going to be flat and comedic throughout - like the many others I’ve read with a similar ridiculous introduction. But the characters started having feelings for each other… and their dynamic became reallyyyy interesting… and I find myself getting immersed in psychoanalysis, which is my fav part of reading. I didn’t expect that I was going to put this in my worth reread at all.
90's Cram School for Unripe Apples
I loved cheese in the trap despite it being more than bittersweet (I have a thing for the second lead, and I’m just not satisfied that he had to leave! It was totally unnecessary!) so I’m both looking forward to this new project from the same author and vaccinating myself for any unusualness. Basically I’m happy there’s a new project, but I’m nervous to dive in! Who knows what this one has in store for me! But not reading is absolutely not an option ^^ lol Update: Omg this SO adorable?? I had to endure the early chapters, but in chapter 9 I was SOLD! I totally ship the MC and ML
I Hate
Childhood friends for both pairs… some fluff… some parts didn’t make sense, but I like this author so I’m just grateful she wrote more stories :) I’m just waiting for a masterpiece that would really suit my tastes!
Nights Before Night
I really like the intensity of this one… The concept of falling for both siblings is interesting, for sure. It’s not like those shallow plot BL full of cliche characters. The characters are what make this story good. The MC could only be Hiro - and the story could only be about these trio - otherwise it wouldn’t bear the same flavor that makes it a masterpiece. I like that there is recurring theme of sleep. Sleep is connected to Hiro’s trauma and, later on, to his mental recovery and emotional closure. Sleep also seems to represent his punishment - on the night that Shigure died, Hiro was sleeping soundly after having spent time with him (if he hadn’t fell asleep, could the outcome have been different, is what Hiro may be subconsciously harboring and that contributes to his insomnia too). Kiyotaka also seems to have only heard Hiro say his feelings for him when Kiyotaka is seemingly asleep - both when Hiro called him very cute, and when Hiro said I love you. In addition to sleep, I love the theme of healing. This was the story of not just Hiro finding forgiveness and peace of mind, but also Kiyotaka’s and Shiro’s as well. I don’t agree that Kiyotaka had to join the yakuza just to save Hiro… I’m so sad about that :( Haru and Shiro got prostituted in the yakuza, Shigure killed people and got depressed because of the yakuza, and guess who got Shigure killed? Also the yakuza. Then Kiyotaka got stabbed by the yakuza too. The yakuza’s gonna be the death of these babies Ugh! Usually I get invested in the story and love the characters impersonally when I read these stories, but Shigure’s one of those rare characters that I actually feel deep tenderness about. I don’t think he deserved what happened to him, and I think he’s so lovable for all he did :’( I wish he was still alive. Anyway, these are just a few of the things I like about Night Before Night. I can’t think of anything else coherent on the top of my head; but I know there’s more because I feel them swirling in me, I just can’t make sense of the rest. And writing in this narrow rectangular textbox that doesn’t give me room for editing at all is a pain. One thing is for sure, this is exactly my taste
MODS
This is from the same author of Mods. I feel bad for Shiro, but also I don’t relate very much with him. I hope they become happy though. Shiro deserves someone who can take care of him and show him love. Excuse my lewd side though… I really like the ending.
Junjou Escape
There’s a part here that resonated, and I would have given this a 4 star if not for the subpar ending… When MC started falling in love with the guy who threatened him into being sex friends, I thought “oh no, that is not good at all” :( When MC overheard that Yoshida ends it with people who start catching feelings for him, I was like, “tell him you’re in love with him so he can end this ridiculous arrangement!” :D
Never Good Enough
This just resonated more than I expected. At least there’s no overly dim-witted and clumsy character this time. That kind of cliche is SO OVERUSED. Because it’s so rare to find, I find myself enjoying more and more of these types of pairs wherein the characters are more adult-like in their senses. No one pretends as if they don’t what’s right in front of them, when it’s so effing obvious. Instead, there’s misunderstandings and deliberate saving face. When that’s juxtaposed with the child-like need for attention and love, it really creates a charisma that only comes with a flawed character that has the potential for so much growth. The characters are incomplete by themselves, and only can be completed by revealing the dynamics with the other characters. There is irony in every character: manipulative and yet enduring (brother), realistic yet idealistic (Louis), obedient yet sharp (Theo). All these create charismatic, complex characters with more depth. Moreover, they’re not overdone, or unnecessarily convoluted. All the behaviors remain consistent with their predisposed traits or changes - there is ample time for the reader to adapt to any growth or decline, and every event or confession or action almost always have an acceptable reason, or at least remain consistent enough with the perspective to be tolerable. I’ll probably come up with a better way to describe it once I reread again. And I will.
Sabita Yoru Demo Koi Wa Sasayaku
It’s not the same outstanding, strike-to-the-heart finds of mine, but I’m giving it five stars nonetheless. It’s a different kind of five stars category that I’m making for it since it’s very good and lovable but different from my usual five stars worth reread 3000. First off, the characterization of the MC and ML are the first of their kinds for me to have encountered. Not separately, but in tandem. I’ve seen characterizations like MC before but not with an ML like this, and it brings out a different flavor from MC’s type of personality when paired with this ML. It’s hard to capture in words what I’m seeing here, or maybe I’m still unsure how I really feel about these two - I just started loving them at the end. Mayama’s expressions were the best in the finale and the extras LMAO I literally laughed to hard.
