I think, at first you need to be patient because Jiwoo (MC) is new to this world and he needs to develop his power and also his mentality. more you get into the problem and the story, and that's when jiwoo start to grow and become more and more appealing.

it's actually really interesting how the author introduce the world to the reader. They don't follow the usual formula of shoving all informations at once but instead doing it slowly by making revelations, and author clearly not affraid to killed some of the characters off.
