The premise is that she became the maid of the heroine as the heroine paid off her family's debt because she thought they were "friends" when all they did was greet each other when they cross paths. Realizing how kind the heroine was to her she wanted to repay her but she couldn't do anything as:
1. Money? The heroine literally paid off her family debt and called it pocket change.
2. Status? The heroine is the beloved daughter of a powerful marquis family and had the hearts of future leaders in the kingdom.
The only way to help her was to become her maid as the heroine in the story was ditzy as it took her a long while for her realize the male leads feelings and tended to be forgetful. By becoming her maid she can help with that and help keep her from future harm.
I personally think the heroine knew all along that the male leads were trash but by being "oblivious" she could keep them away and all of her other "friends" she forgets are those who want to use her. The heroine guessed that the MC was a kind person since she didn't try to get into her space and act like they are friends, and when she paid off her debt instead of taking advantage of that to get more money she tried to repay her with all that she had.
