The people closest to her betrayed her in the worst way possible and in the end, didn't even suffer any retribution. The guy just got (metaphorically) slapped back to reality and everyone she knew didn't even realise she had left for good. No one was there for her death, no one realised and moved on with their lives. She took the baby and returned to the ocean. Man the pic of that big whale with the small baby whale swimming deeper into the ocean as if returning home after being wounded and disappointed with the world was just too damn depressing. A good read but definitely not one where the bad people suffer and the good have a happy ending.
