Momo To Manji
2019?. Great artsyle which matches the time period yet looks unique. Good character designs giving a uniform look fitting their society while showing distinct personalities. Character stories feel fleshed out; we get to know their past, their feelings, their behavior. Really cool that I learned historical bits of info while reading.
Konbini S
2000. Story focuses on the interpersonal relationships of girls & their interactions. There is also a consciousness of the time period in addition to this. This shows girls' roles in society. Girls do not feel passive; they have their desires & act on them. It's interesting to see how they live. This manga particularly contrasts how girls in the present have freedom in contrast to the restrictiveness of the past. Thoughtful contemplation of relationships in present (being cheap & shallow) & thoughtful in characterizing youth ( being capricious, risky, but full of freedom). I love that this was mature & gave realistically bold depictions of real life. Brilliant! Great writing. After throwing in different threads, the messages came full circle. Nice balance of realism & sweet messages about living.
Dear Gene
Kid from the present day '90s spends time at his Uncle Trevor's house in NY to sightsee, on the condition to help his Uncle clean his study. While tidying he finds an old journal.. This story takes place in the 1970s & is about Uncle Trevor's love with a man named Gene. Too beautiful for words so far. I hope this gets completed one day
Sentimental Fruits
This has really rich visual flourishes or decorations in the background to convey mood. Only problem is the actual situations are highschool romance problems so everything came off a bit ridiculous in a cheesy way. (I'm thinking of the last story). It's neat the author relied only on images to tell her story so it can be universally understood. I didn't like the last story, the only one with dialogue. I thought the writing wasn't good. It's not offensive, it just could have expressed something much better. The problem is really melodramatic. Like the main girl's "soul is empty" or something, because some boys were assholes & asked her out as a prank one time. Definitely a mean thing but not serious enough to overreact. Like, hello, welcome to middle/highschool, where boys (& girls) can be little shits. Of course it hurts, but you learn to not waste time on people like that & move on for yourself. This expresses a weak main character. Also, it was such a missed opportunity she never confronted the boys. Rather, the author went the romance route & had the boy speak for her. We never get the catharsis of seeing her stand up for herself or the character development this would have had. Rather than showing she has changed for the better & become more assertive, she is shown more passive & the boy defends her. Although stereotypical, I wouldn't say this is wrong. Just not my cup of tea.
Shimanami Tasogare
2015. A Masterpiece i feel this is a very sincere depiction of LGBT youth.
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind
1983 - 1993. One of the best of all time.
Moritat
2017. Twisted mindfuck! A couple doesn't know where they begin & where they end when using a memory altering system called Moritat. What follows is a struggle of power between the two as the mc tries to solve the mystery of his circumstances.
