This is homophobia in action. It is a child's understanding from being raised to believe boys can only like girls and to like boys is perverted. If they had been exposed to the thinking that boys can like boys and it is normal then this separation because of his feelings of love and fear of being like the rapist would've never happened. Homophobia and their child-like minds caused the misunderstandings.
