I will be waiting for you in 1999

Complete | D. Jun | 2000 released

Why is this even tagged as a Shounen Ai? The entire story seemed to lead up to that kind of ending, but once you get to Bai Ming's heart issues, you're wondering if they're a rival and where this is even heading. The ending is pretty unsatisfying. I would have actually preferred it if Ming Qi was a murderer's son because it would've been something unique. Not only that but as they try to instill strength & finding independence in dependency--which I'm guessing is the whole moral here--it's horrifically done. We see this whole dispute over Tang Yuan and Xiao Xin, whom we literally can't understand why they're supposed to be this "in love" couple that needs to make amends, and we're supposed to accept that the only solution is for Ming Qi to take the verbal abuse and for Tang Yuan to just be okay with that and not lash back? To even want her back when we don't even understand why? Why the hell couldn't we find Shi Yi? How does that even make sense? For him to suddenly disappear and for his family and friends to not find him ANYWHERE?? And, we're supposed to be satisfied with that? I might've been okay with being tricked into reading it for the supposed "Shounen Ai"--and POSSIBLE queerbaiting (only IF the manhua-ga was aware of how this was being marketed)--had the ending not been so messy and rushed. The story wasn't bad going into it, but they just left the ending with having too much left to be desired.

I have a lot of conflicting feelings about this story, but I will say that I did not regret reading this story. Unfortunately, I feel that this manhwa suffered from having overly repetitive dialogue and scenes (some things looked copy & pasted..). It was also such a shame to start the manhwa off already showing us the result, spoiling it. It was pretty unnecessary considering it would have already started off great with the beginning part of Youngjoon’s story. On that note, the transitions definitely needed some work. There was some crazy time jumps that caught me completely off guard. Our protagonist, Youngjoon, was an amazingly patient character. Even I felt Hyun was being way too overbearing and wished he would stop crying and repeating the same things over and over.. Other than that, they did a pretty good job showing the relationship’s progression, as well as presenting supporting characters’ into the story—they never took over and created unnecessary filler, something many manhwa-gas struggle with. (To add, it’s always incredibly satisfying to see art gradually improve). As for the baseball aspect, I was pretty impressed. It did not get too complicated that I could not keep up, but I could still tell that the manhwa-ga knew their stuff. Overall, I think it’s a decent read. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to read it in one night
