Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy - Future Arc & Despair Arc Comic Anthology (Dengeki Comics EX)

Complete | Spike Chunsoft,Emu | 2000 released

-I personally prefer the DNA Media Anthology over this one. -Unfortunately, reaching the 50s (page-wise), I found myself confused over certain comics, and no matter how many times I went through it, I could not understand whatever punchline and/ or overall message that was supposed to be conveyed -- especially since there were no Translator's Notes to confirm it was actually something that did not translate well or that this comic would probably not be understood by people separate from Japan's trends and culture. Moreover, I doubt the translation was wrong since -for the majority of the read- it was practically flawless. I would hate to chalk it down to being a 'Japan' thing, but I am afraid that is what it may be. Unlike with the DNA Media Comic Anthology, where there are rarely any moments where it becomes difficult to understand, this one was frustratingly difficult to read through because of its lack of universality. Whatever the case, I ultimately felt these comics could have been so much more. Even though these comics can usually be pretty Out of Character, there was too much emphasis on the artist's bias and perception of the characters rather than on the overarching gags and insightfulness usually found within these anthologies, if that makes sense. However, that was not always the case. For instance, you had the Mioda comic where she throws her message into her "ocean". It made me overjoyed to see someone give Mioda more to her character and talent than through how the majority sees it. Rather than thinking of it stereotypically, the artist understood, as the 'Ultimate Musician', much more thought and meaning go into the lyrics and music than just plain "noise" or blatant "preference" of a genre. It's experimental. That's what makes a musical genius a genius. All of that came together for a meaningful and thoughtful comic under the guise of a gag. Regardless, that's what I had been hoping for, but alas: I was met with great despair. Maybe that was the point. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I've read the past short comics like these, and I found this one to be one of the more unlikable ones. Usually, these are Out of Character (OOC), yes; but, what bothered me the most about this one in particular was how far OOC a character would be just for the sake of the gag. As much as I understood that, I also understand that most fans will look at that and take it at face value, which will then only reinforce the horribly erroneous stereotypes associated with those characters. As much as I could find some joy in the entire thing as a whole, the amount of underhanded jokes laced with obvious bias towards certain characters made this really bad. It's disappointing, really. And, don't even get me started on the "gender" joke they were trying to go for with Monomi... In the game, I had absolutely no qualms over it since it obviously didn't mean anything, but this time I found too many problems with it, unfortunately.

This is ridiculously heteronormative in comparison to the game... It's sad that even in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havok/the Animation comics, there's much more freedom in jokes involving sexuality??? if that makes sense?? After all, this is the game (DR2) with some of the more 'queer'-er characters, so I would have expected the jokes to be much more open-minded; however, the gags are consistently straight-manned and laced with bias and stereotypes that it even makes Teruteru such a breath of relief whenever he appears and breaks that hetero streak...

Killer Killer

That ending could have been wAYYYY more better...

Danganronpa - The Academy of Hope and the High School Students of Despair 4-koma Kings

Ongoing | Spike Chunsoft,Aiko | 2000 released

What ruined this was (1) the use of f**. Not cool. It was hugely unnecessary. And, (2) there was WAY too much flack given to Sakura's figure being this "ugly" feminine body, which was absolutely fucking gross and toxic. If it weren't for those two things, this would have been perfect...

Not gonna lie... this starts becoming boring when the story drags on after the happy ending is reached.. as nice as it is that everyone who deserves happiness is happy, i don't think its necessary to give more story to it... but that's just me.
