Re: Life Player

Ugh this became increasingly cliche as the plot progresses. I noticed this in other manhwas that involved this type of regression or dungeon-esque plot, is this a trend? I have to drop it, I can't waste my time reading this when there are so many hidden gems out there. It has potential but I was prepared after being disappointed with 'The beginning after the end'. That's something that makes me sad just thinking about it. I read upto Ch38. When he was a year old, that inner monologue he had that 'All I do is sleep, shit and eat' went semi-viral so I knew of it. Also when he protected his sister from that wild dog, I saw that on a YouTube short. I cringed from it and I am still cringing now tbh.

How inspiring. This made me change my outlook on this genre, it invokes such emotions out of the readers (me). Normally, when I read a series that I really like.. I just consume it at light-speed, binging it but I was not anxious at all while reading this. I wanted to savour it and sometime halt my reading so that I could ponder on the things that is being conveyed to us by the author through the characters. The MC is such a good and kind person (upto where I read). He started from the bottom and worked tirelessly to where he is now, a trait that is common. Yet what separates him from other MCs that fall into this category is his dedication to stay true, to be humble, to not end up emotionless, numb and apathetic to the plight of others. He goes through such lengths for others and when they show gratitude toward him, that is enough to give him happiness and make him think that is the reason he died a hundred times for. The characters and their interaction with Gong-ja is unique in their own ways, some of my favorites are - the Sword Emperor and him : the former constantly hounding him, training him, advising him and being impressed by his will power and kindness while being dumbfounded by his tricks and bluff. The latter being tired of him yet listening to him but rebutting him as well. I also admire him telling off the Heavenly Demon on teaching him the sorrows of the world while he hasn't experienced the joy this world could offer, that time is too short even to experience joy. That he hasn't yet experienced love and has not even dated anyone yet. It showed me how much he cared for Gong-ja. He said it was too early for him to act like he was carrying the burden of the world when he hasn't experienced happiness. The Sword Saint and him : I still mourn the first timeline where Gong-ja expresses his true feelings about how he feels not worthy and being embarrassed to act like the bigger person in front of him and the Sword Saint being shocked and trying to match him up with his granddaughter (then getting angry when he seemed to be opposed to the idea), telling him where he should get his suit and being so warm towards him. Then that disappeared with Gong-ja dying and since he couldn't repeat the same actions (if he did, it would lose it's meaning and seem insincere, also Marcus would be able to see through his act). But their relationship has gotten better with him gaining his recognition although Gong-ja lied to him about being a prophet. The Witch and Gong-ja : I won't be mad if she were the love interest, I assumed her to be a bad person because of her introduction, with the Flame Emperor asking the Saint if she made her poison him, to old man Marcus doubting her as well. But she cares so deeply for the lives of people, the reason she was so lifeless and seemed apathetic was because of the hundreds of lives lost on the 12th floor, as the number of casualties changed.. So did her expressions. From beaming with happiness with only hundreds of lives lost, to being speechless with only fifty, then her eyes crinkling and tears flowing with ten then her holding Gong-ja's hand and praying while thanking him repeatedly when there were no lives lost. I love her, also her speech amping up the Aegim Empire soldiers then her failing to convince Gong-ja that it was her copying the politicians in Ukraine. Gong-ja also seem quite taken with her. And lastly, the Heavenly Demon and her disciple : This must be the most I have seen Gong-ja care for an individual, not to mention the lengths he went through to become her disciple from starving to death, dying from thirst etc seeing the trauma of those he killed to experiencing it himself, eating mud-cookies dried in the sun, to drinking contaminated water and so on. Him being sad when he couldn't fathom the duel between the Sword Emperor and her to her patiently teaching him. Him crying when she died, all of it moved me. Aaah! The 10th floor was brutal. The children dying unfairly, being burned to death, being trafficked.. I saw the scene on a YouTube short and being creeped out by the dolls and not understanding him playing hide-and-seek with them until I came across a comment explaining. That was when I saw Gong-ja in a different light. I also think that was when the Sword Emperor truly acknowledged him. I dropped this on seeing the first chapter not knowing that it was the story I saw on that short but seeing his envy and continuously saying the same shit 'I want to be like the Flame Emperor' was annoying me and made me feel a way that I didn't like. With him having his room be filled with newspapers about him, watching interviews of him.. He seemed so real and so miserable that I couldn't take it. This is why I need to practice how to see things through because this is a gem. I like him committing to kill himself 409 (?) times just to kill him, to eradicate the threat that his existence would bring. I am also looking forward to how this story progresses. Who are the six pillars? Who made the tower?

Mashle: Magic and Muscles

Ongoing | Hajime komoto | 2019 released

Aaahh! I thoroughly enjoyed this. If we were to rank mangas on the level of enjoyment it gave us, it would be a 10/10. The plot itself is not the forefront of the story, it's the characters, the gags, the side tangents, the impossible physics of it all. Everything is illogical, it is not realistic at all. The mass absurdity of everything is at such a level that u kind of leave all your apprehension behind and just enjoy it. The MC is 'One punch man' and 'Mob Psycho' mixed into one. The former because of the physical strength and the latter because of the character design. I am certain the author heavily draws inspiration from the two. The MC is OP as hell and grows at an unprecedented level, like he just powers up without any apparent reason. Even God is shocked at Mash for his strength. Cream buns are his lifeline and his subtle shade gives me life. Poking fun at other shounen mangas while at it is also another element that I appreciate. It is a parody afterall. Sister complex on steroids is essentially Lance. Like that bro breathes in air from his little sister, Anna. He has pins of his sister all over his body and gets literal whiplash when seeing her face. I do think Mash comes second to him with maybe the hot-blooded Dot following suit. Ah! Dot and his dynamic is worth exploring. At first I think Lance just puts up with him because of Mash so they always butt-heads with eo but when they fought the third brother, it was the moment Lance actually acknowledged him. "I will fight for your sister's sake as well", he said. The brothers are also interesting though they are one-dimensional. The first is the most interesting to me because he has a principle he follows, the second is just a nut-job with a bit of an inferiority complex (?), The third who btw looks the oldest, he looks like a typical middle-aged Japanese business man, is arguably the most insane one to me, he believes in Puddingology, creates potions sucking life and magic energy from people. Which is why Lance lost his cool since Anna suffered from that. The fourth..hmmm..who was it again? He escapes me..I guess he was the least memorable. Oh! He fought against the siblings..Raynes and Finn. The Fifth..Dominas was born in the same year as Mash and possess the most magic energy out of all the siblings...it doesn't mean he is the most powerful (just in terms of magic). What else? He has a bit of a redemption scene..he craved his father's love and would do anything to obtain it. So he was unsettled when he came across the kind of love that Mash and his pops had for eo. He envied them. He used his last magic energy he had left to stall for time for Mash's recovery. The pops isn't that interesting..did it say he is 75 years old now? Mash is only fifteen as of now so that's a big gap. Maybe that's also the reason he is so doting towards him, he scolds him but then easily forgives him when Mash seems like he regrets his actions. Mash never learns from it tho. He doesn't know if the door should be pulled or pushed up until now. If it were grounded in reality, I would worry that Mash would've had to see his pops die. Considering that he spends most of his time in the academy and only goes home during holidays, he doesn't have a lot of time together with his pops. The one who made Mash attend the academy coming to truly care for Mash was heartwarming indeed.

I like it. The pacing is quite fast and it feels like things are happening one after another way too quickly so there is no room to breathe. The MC although very interesting feels very like the typical MC shounen protagonist, he falls under that. So far I have finished fifty-six chapters so far and I like it atm. I wish we got more character moments, heartwarming moments, character interactions, tear jerking scenes, more backstory, etc but I get that this isn't that type of manhwa so I've made my peace with it. It's the type of manhwa that you can pick up anytime and start reading. It just feels redundant for me personally since it's the same format.. Problem arise-MC takes care of it/misunderstanding occurs-MC deals with it/villains arrive-MC knows about it n once again deals with it. I do like the pets he has though. Nothing feels natural or organic but whatever I guess. I like Javier too, he's a nice character. This feels very in the same vein as TCF but more surface level and much less character and plot focus. You just leave your brain behind and just read without thinking about anything. The Queen... She's alright.

A Ranker's Guide to The Good Life

Ongoing | Teze | 2022 released

This is sub par. It had a lot of potential but it was ruined because of the MC. She's so damn annoying, if u are going to do an OP protagonist, you should learn from One Punch Man. Saitama is such an amazing MC despite his unparalleled power. The anime is so engaging and the side characters were so engaging. Genos and his master and disciple relationship was top tier honestly. And in Season 2 we barely got to see Saitama because there would be no suspense, rather we spent more time on the 'villain'. What I'm saying is the plot isn't progressing, the comedy is a miss, the characters are one dimensional and the MC is a bore and annoying to read. I thought she would get a character development after she got her memories back but she still remains the same. Her star constantly 'shielding' her probably plays a part but she is still so annoying. Flawed characters are interesting to read and so much more engaging but this girl has no depth to her. She's like a shell of what the author thinks is a numb character who is traumatized from her dad's passing. Her younger brother and sister, I wish were explored more. Her youngest sister is the only one who isn't special and she doesn't want to use her brother's fame, plus her reaction when they mentioned it would be too much if the eldest child was also special had something... It had potential! Explore! The other two were raised by Beom essentially and because they are both 'awakeners' they are a lot closer.. Expand on that. Rather than making it a comedy of the younger brother chasing and looking after his irresponsible immature elder sister. Maybe it's cause the translation is off but the way Beom asked her to take off the clothes she wore cuz it was another man's had jealousy written all over it... I don't want it. Their age gap plus he raised her... Also cause of the character design Beom looks like he's in his early thirties and the MC a middle schooler although she is still only twenty. She confessed to him 10 years ago she said...so when she was 10!! Seriously and she thinks only if I were older then.. Like noooo!! Please no... I like the regressor.. Please pair him up with MC!! I know she ends up with the star in the novel but please let this be different!. Couple things I'm curious about... The one who calls her Kiddo who corrupted her in the previous world. His alias is the '13th month' and he is the leader of a terrorist group? And his cover up is being the Vice Leader of a group founded by the 1st ranker in the US... The second thing is the star, he said 'Be mine again'... Again! And some words are always omitted so I wonder about their history.. Is he Beom incarnate or something!! I'm grasping at straws at this point.. I love how the regressor is trying to save the world and in turn save MC and kill the one who said Kiddo. He said for someone so indifferent but not heartless, to do something like that.. And it pans to the man who said Kiddo sooo...

Housekeeper in a Dungeon

I fucking love this. This is great. I love the MC, I love the brother and I love the ML. This is so wholesome. I like that she makes do with what she has and is so normal, no trying to be cool or too curt. She's a normal average citizen of a society. No quirkiness or anything. I like the puppy ML, how he becomes talkative when he's drunk etc. I like his brother too, the complete opposite of him.. Organised, responsible, very put together.. I like how everyone adores the MC. Also the way this author writes the female characters..Chef's kiss mwah.. The CEO is a woman.. The team leader is a woman(I thought she was a man at first)..and no underlying message that just because a woman has a job, she's a bad person/sister/wife and has bad personality etc.. Nice female representation..

Empress Hunt

Ongoing | kan | 2019 released

This is cute. I don't think it's confusing unlike some people. I like Casar's devotion to Seul and although Seul herself didn't stand out to me, I like their chemistry. I wish the General's illegitimate son played a bigger role in all this but I digress. The new captain turning out to be a girl was surprising. At least she found the light at last, she was annoying for no reason. The way Seul was so impulsive also irritated me. But I guess all in all Marin is the most intriguing character. I love how her husband loved her unconditionally and had such a sense of justice. I like his sociopath sister as well. When they curse, the way they mute out d*** is so hilarious for no reason.. It isn't even right! The two children were a tragedy.. Their whole clan is a piece of trash.. But that also is part of their culture, their tradition, their code.. They are warriors after all. The most interesting thing would be the Empress and Marin for me.. They were so fascinating. The way the Empress reached out to her and said "My Marin, don't cry" touched me!! Like that feels the most raw and authentic.

I really like this. I like the MC and his two brothers. The second not so much but I digress. I never knew I would see a doting father like big brother.... Love to see it. Also I was worried for a second that it might turn into a harem of some sort but thankfully we didn't take that route. The girls are barely there in the story but better that than an annoying fl who is a liability to the main cast since that's the only trop shounen action mangakas can write. I like the MC's dynamic with I forgot his name... Sword Saint Disciple. He's so pure and sweet, it's a shame that it seems he will be in the background going forward since it's obvious that he's falling behind The second brother being a simp I did not foresee at all. Also the minor 17 year old proposing marriage scared me but the MC considers her a minor younger than his sister. But I hate that he blushes and seems to ve somewhat hesitating. I love the dynamic between his Master and him... They are so alike it's crazy... They shout and aren't honest with their feelings, brash etc etc. I like how he's so attentive and so braggy about his disciple's accomplishments. Also I fell for the misdirect regarding the Sword Saint tho I felt that it was a bit much when he told his disciple that he wasn't his friend.

The Dark Magician Transmigrates After 66666 Years

Ongoing | TDMTA6Y | 2019 released

I quite like this. It's not groundbreaking but it has everything to hook you in. I like Jamie, he fits my expections for an MC. I like that he sees his love's reincarnation as just a reincarnation. I like that perspective. "She is a kid", he says... I like his wholesome and affectionate family. I wonder how his lil sis will grow up. To be honest... The earlier chapters were better... I feel like it lost steam around the 100 chapter mark. The 12 gods are despicable for sure but it went in the direction I was least expecting. I was thinking they'd be more subtle but they are downright committing massacre left and right. I am most curious about 'Ra'... He seems very mysterious. Also the bit about Jamie, that he might not be complete since his og body is still in that darkness thing. The Lan thing intrigued me at first sight but it didn't manage to keep my interest. People taking the DNa from the queen and blossoming into a flower from a seed was interesting... I forgot the name of that race though. Though I do like Jamie's dad, the way Sears immediately cut ties with the childhood friend lacked emotional depth I feel, there was no conflict. It was a waste honestly. Ch145.
