Not the most fucked up thing I've ever read, but pretty fucked up. As far as "portraying people that are unhealthily attached to each other" goes, this does it pretty well. I don't ever doubt that the MC and Yule are in love with each other, no matter how awful things get, but everything we see between them is horrible with rare moments of Yule finding clarity, but them ending up together makes sense. In reality, everyone in this story needs a lot of help, but the epilogue as we see it with Yule being traumatized himself and trying to make little changes is probably as good as it could believably get within what the author wanted to do? Otherwise "moving away, getting help, and changing your whole ass life" would've been the play. But I am, in a sentient way, accepting of them ending up together. It's unhealthy. It will get healthier over time. It will always be stained by trauma and horror. They are completely traumatized people that would, ideally, rebuild themselves side-by-side while taking recovery from their pasts seriously and consciously trying to improve. It would suck horribly and be miserable for both, but that's what the author hints at being the case. At least that's what I'd like to hope for.
If you read this as a story about abuse, trauma, and desperation, it's a lot better than if you read it as a romance.
