A multi-generational story of a family cursed to use a power that causes them physical harm, and the paper dolls - kami - who take on their pain. In good yaoi fashion, that means having a lot of sex. Also the puppets are made from human remains (for future generations, the remains of their own family.) Isn't yaoi fun. Among the stories, there were three I liked best: Genma and Himi (beware dub and noncon in their early days), Waki and Magane (because of the emotional challenge of being in love with someone who is bound to someone else), and Shoui and Asari. Theirs was, hands down, the best of the stories. The twins are awful. I skipped them on re-read. ETA: Considering I can't get this out of my head, adding it to the top 100 list. 4/25/20 - Still think about this a lot. Added a star. Skipped the twins again. They serve zero purpose and ruin so many poignant moments.
Gokusen
The granddaughter and fourth generation of a yakuza family follows her dream to become a teacher, transforming the lives of the students in her care. Her other dream is a life with the family's lawyer, but one of her students, Sawada Shin, has his eye on her. SPOILERS This is officially the best thing I've ever read. I devoured this across a few days. Ojou is precious, hilarious, loyal, and so relatable. I expected she'd end up with the lawyer, and that Shin would grow wiser after his first love, but no!!! She fell in love with Shin after he graduated! We get to watch their relationship develop across a couple of years. I'd love to see them in the future after he has graduated law school and they succeed the group. Aw I bet they'll have kids too. :-DDDDDDDD I'm pretty sure, after extensive googling and my poor ability to read kanji, that this is the 4-panel manga from a 2009 release showing their two kids: https://up.gc-img.net/post_img/2017/09/fgPHGvzbTBoVKHg_lRWj9_99.jpeg The first baby is calling out "Techya!" and striking his face. He increasingly experiences more pain and finally says, "Seriously??" I haven't translated the final panel yet but I think it mentions blood. From https://girlschannel.net/comment/1360570/99/ The panel and the magazine containing it were listed in the Japanese Gakusen wikipedia.
Gelateria Supernova
Every week, Satoya meets up with an older man he knows only as 'Kio' whom he met through a dating app. They eat gelato and have sex, but Kio never stays the night and they know nothing about each other. Six months in, they begin to eat together and talk more, and the sex becomes more intense. Kio stays over - heralding a change in their relationship - but then he disappears, and Satoya has no way to contact him. He never even knew his name. Will Kio come back into his life? Of course, this is BL manga. There's a happy ending. This is sweet and I understand the sequel is available on Renta. I'm going to check it out. My only advice for the couple would be...just talk about things openly. Radio silence isn't helpful. September 2020 ETA: The sequel was added! Naoki is now 30+! The new chapters are another volume of domestic bliss.
