Sangen Tonari No Tooi Hito
For a decade, a man has harbored a one-sided love for his older brother's friend, only to find they are neighbors. The final chapter is a oneshot: a writer goes to an oceanside retreat and is visited nightly by a boy who can walk on water.
Summer Switch
When his mother guilts him into returning home, Jiro is reunited with his first love: the friend he'd stolen a kiss from years ago.
Sumanai!! Masumi-kun
An older writer ends up living with the man who was supposed to be his son-in-law when his daughter backs out of her wedding. (Spoilers) I was delighted that the daughter's reason for walking out was that she was in a relationship with another woman, and that she didn't want her father left alone after she left to live with her. I found all of the characters likable. A soft and sweet romance perfect for bedtime. I would like to know what happens to the neighbor!
Shachou to Hisho, Ai no Shoumei
A gently told, beautiful collection of three love stories: 1) An established relationship between a secretary and his adoring boss. (Temp MCD; dream sequence) 2) Childhood friends reunite, and through photography, realize their feelings are mutual. 3) In the aftermath of a major error, a boss and subordinate find common ground in their shared loneliness and begin a relationship that is supportive and tender; their love was so immediate and sincere, it gave me butterflies.
Nekasenaide
Three love stories revolving around a bakery.
Takaga Koidaro
A single father recovering from the loss of his wife is caught between his brother-in-law, a member of the Yakuza, and a childhood friend who suddenly reenters his life 12 years after cruelly ending their friendship. Spoilers: To be honest, I really think Izumi is better off with his brother in law.
Yozora no Sumikko de
Two boys who had been in love when they were younger are reunited now that they are adults. One is a teacher, and the other a parent to one of his students. Stars are the prominent metaphor. ETA 2021: This is still pretty, and I still enjoyed it, but it’s either something with this author or some thing about their writing that is lost in translation. Their works miss the emotional mark for me. A lot of introspection and not a lot of forward momentum.
Family Simulation!!
Five stars for the main story about two childhood friends who reunite and live together for two months when one has to look after his sister's five-year-old son. The second story is skippable.
Owaranai Fukou Ni Tsuite No Hanashi
Even after eight years, a man realizes he's still in love with a friend from high school that he runs into at a bar. There is a non-con scene in a car after heavy drinking. It wasn't done out of violence, but one party was not able to consent, so it's non-con.
