The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass

Ongoing | 산소비 | 2019 released

This is literally the ONLY one of these villainess reincarnation manhwas I've read wherein the MC actually feels like a villainess. She's cunning, self-serving and even somewhat sadistic. She only became a villainess because of circumstances imposed on her; but even after growing more mature and being reincarnated, it's not like she's suddenly a saint. Even if she is witty and charismatic the story makes a point of showing that she is still somewhat a genuinely unpleasant person and I just love it so much ! it makes her feel so much more fleshed out, on top of the fact that even though she takes challenges in stride, she can still be caught off guard sometimes and come to incorrect conclusions (albeit reasonable). It makes me root for her so much harder, I share her satisfaction in the slightest of victories, and am delighted by her cruelty. The revenge aspect of the story is truly it's whole focus, it --and subsequently the motivations of the MC-- are not immediately derailed by the presence of a love interest which is also refreshing. Knowing how distinct of a personality the MC has, I actually look forward to the implementation of romance in the story, because I know that it will be unique rather than the predictable slog you can expect with most other reincarnation manhwa romances.

Survive Romance

Ongoing | Lee Yeon | 2021 released

i have yet to read a korean isekai that has managed to bend genres in such an interesting and engaging way. literally from the very first episode i was on the edge of my seat. because what i thought would be another shallow romance using the pretence of reincarnation as plot fodder, turned out to be an incredibly compelling deconstruction of novel isekai's. one that embraced the unconventional nature of its premise in order to flesh out not just the main character, but ALL of the supporting cast. everyone has distinct personalities and designs and functions in the story. and i just cannot express enough how much i love the centring of a relationship between two women as the catalyst for much of the plot. i have become so exhausted of these paper-thin manhwas with their borderline misogynistic implications of the merit of heterosexual romance, what a fucking breath of fresh air man. creepy and intense, such genuine originality is found in this world-building. drop whatever lame-ass money-hungry isekai copy-paste you are reading right now THIS IS IT.
