Everything would've been avoided if he confessed the truth right after his fake confession. They're not expecting him to say yes, so what's the point of dragging it out. The way the uke probably was never able to trust someone's word and action after that. He knew it was fake, but he kept on "accidentally" sending mixed signals because of his feelings.
