To keep the Guardian Deity appeased, they offer him human sacrifices to ‘warm his bed’ and otherwise attend to his needs after nightfall, but they tend not to last very long; giving their bodies to the Guardian Deity results in their eyes becoming red and their bodies growing gradually weaker—a condition that invariably kills them once their eyes shift fully crimson. The current offering was picked up off the street as an unnamed child, following the death of his predecessor. He was given to the Guardian Deity—still mourning the death of the previous offering—and he was surprised to find that even gods could cry, so he wanted to do everything in his power to make the Guardian Deity feel better, and became utterly devoted to him, finding purpose in his position despite the disgusted looks and whispers that follow him through the Tokoyoda residence. After seven years, and with his eyes quite red, it is rumoured that he is not long for this world, but he is unbothered by it, and instead does his duty happily, enjoying the company of the Guardian Deity however he'll take him. One night, the offering confesses that he had a dream of the two of them escaping the Tokoyoda residence and living freely together in the warmth of the sunlight, and the Guardian Deity begins to think that this time might be different, so the two agree to give eachother names in preparation. The offering—having never been named before—is given the name Akari, meaning "bright" (or alternatively, "vermillion red" depending on the spelling, both make sense in context) and the Deity—having been imprisoned so long he has forgotten his name—is given the name Hinata, meaning "sunny place", since they have become each other's light in the oppressive Tokoyoda residence.
