So without any surprise Pearl is Maximilian the Crown Prince. And he dies at the end of the novel so that's that. Anyway, at the end he leaves with the Emperor's mistress and she gives him a painting that Maxi asked her to give it to Jean. The painting from the first chapters, where Jean is lying in the bed. Anyway, Max acted as a debauched and foolish prince while he was helping the revolutionaries behind the scenes.
