It wasn't that he was just a dick, he just has NO PEOPLE SKILLS WHATSOEVER. Which isn't surprising if this is how he's been treated his whole life. And since he's never been treated any other way himself and just had to accept it for what it was, he can't possibly know to treat anyone else differently (especially a human -- Blessed Maiden or not) until he sees one of them ACTUALLY do the right thing before his very eyes. Umehiko did what any normal fuckin' person SHOULD have done from the get-go and defended him when people were cruel and he was simply there to help... but no one did. I'm glad this "character development" occurred when it did because it will definitely be the turning point in their otherwise transactional relationship.
