High fantasy is definitely one of my favorite genres of all time. This one's very shocking to read but all-thrilling at the same time. The art is also on point and exquisite- quite extreme and yandere. Makoto is reborn as a demon and is taken to the demon world where he lives with the Archduke of Hell, J. Although it gets so violent (dark fantasy) with the heavy gore and horror, as well as the detailed body horror imageries, it doesn't overshadow Makoto and J.'s relationship (they still possess a good dynamic relationship - I think so far, I've only seen J. become violent towards Makoto twice coming from someone who's read up to chapter 5.5 vol 1). The mangaka really knows and decisively design their characters to be in certain ways that I can just follow and hope to see more coming (developed), and I realize that Makoto truly struggled with his own inclinations and from this character's pov, it's well communicated. In fact, all of the characters can be introspective at times and I'm glad it kept the story interesting. This mangaka is definitely incredible at storytelling, character designs, and plots. I can almost forget that this is a BL yaoi series - the art style, the intricate demon world designs are detailed and it's intriguing. It's very rare to find that in yaoi series - it feels like this is something josei/seinen demographics reading material because it's not only compelling and captivating, it has some important plots that can happen even in non-yaoi genre. so that's that for now hahahaha no wonder this manga gets an official english translation - very well deserved! I don't remember much from what I've read in the original language (time flies very quickly), but this is adorable. I love that JooHa is trying to become more assertive and more decisive with his intentions. aww I love them NEW REVIEW 2024 (SPOILER) Adult topic: I have to say, I appreciate the reference to SANA's works in this series. I can tell that the creator has an infinite love for Japanese mangaka and animators and comic/animator artists so much that she'd reference it in her series. I love the Japanese references about the scary and thrilling stuff about the underworld life of organized crime groups like the Yakuza (for some apparent reason, sushi shops are always some type of stereotypes lmao that has to do with them, but I don't mind it at all!), and the beautiful artworks and the choices in her color palettes! I'll have to put a disclaimer/advance apology if the creator has expressed a clear intention that she is in no way, referencing SANA's works (because I personally, can see the stark references and that's not a big deal to admit, imo. There's no shame in that, after all many fans are also artists and will reference their fav in their own works). The Critical evaluations: In terms of plot, I can understand her need to elaborately jump on the smut scenes, and we can all agree the art is stunning. However, the story has so many weak holes in it. She throws in and mix in so many of the buzzwords (tropes) in this series but never fully bothered expanding on them. We have to address the elephant in the room, what's the pearl about? What's all the mystery behind JooHa's origin and condition? I was hoping this would turn into something supernatural or at least give us something, like some low level paranormal stuff, like maybe he's the product of some human experiment and that he's a mutant unbeknownst to him, or give it some plot twist. In fact, his absent father is the head of the experiment project and is observing him and gathering data about his son's conditions from the pearls collected by his ex-Bf-cum-legal-stepfather. Give us something so we could run with it. Give us anything to satisfy the curiosity. It's frustrating to see the ending tbf idk what else to say. I can tell that the creator is trying to make it seem like JooHa just happens to be that way, so that's not the main point, BUT THE MAIN POINT IS, JooHa's afflicted and the only person who can save him is DooShik. Ok, and? Can't we at least get some more back story to JooHa's condition? Is that so much to ask?
