F***. Barefoot Gen. ..one of the most harrowing reading experiences I've ever had. I thought that the anime was devastating, but this? This is f***ing masochistic reading. Brilliant, brilliant manga and anime. I lost sleep for weeks after. I couldn't even get through Barefoot Gen 2, for tears. The aftermath, I believe, was probably harder than the war itself. God bless Sensei for surviving to tell this tale.

This was the first manga I fell in love with. It is difficult, demanding and heartbreaking. Highly recommended Couldn't stop crying throughout and at its conclusion, I was left shattered. You'll need a huge box of tissues and bleach for your mind and eyes.

A masterpiece. A freaking masterpiece of emotions and feeling that never veers into diabetic sentimentality or becomes maudlin. Overwhelming in a beautiful way, these are the people I know and love too. The two old men were beautiful and sweet.
