Ch 88 as of 24/06/23 - FL is Rita Wicker, daughter of a Baron who was cast out and had to work as a bar waitress. - 23yo FL is dying from a lung disease (consumption or TB). - FL is a terminally ill patient staying at the La Idel Welfare Centre. She is regularly visited by Verta Alberthart, daughter of a Count. Verta says she is envious of FL’s pending death. - Verta has self-harmed herself by cutting her wrists. She wants to die but can’t kill herself. - When FL was 13yo, her mother was a naive young widow who fell in love with Marquis Proud Carter. He set up FL’s mother who was caught alone with a male servant. She was falsely accused of infidelity to her husband, the late Baron. Sir Charles Wicker, FL’s paternal uncle disowned FL and her mother. This led to her mother eventually committing suicide 3yrs later. - 16yo FL was hired to work as the live-in private tutor for Lieben, the son of Count Todd who is the captain of the royal guards. FL’s mother was close friends with the Countess. - FL was sexually harassed constantly by the Count until Lieben confronted him. - Countess Todd apologised to FL and provided compensation, but she had to ask FL to leave. FL chose to work at a bar rather than go to where the Countess suggested FL could stay, as she feared being found by Count Todd. - Yersha is a sorcerer wanted for the murder of the Sultan’s mistress. FL asks for his help to kill Proud Carter. He suggests an alternative and that is to swap bodies with a noble lady who wants to die. With Yersha’s help, FL becomes Verta Alberthart. - When FL is told by Yersha that Rita has died, FL goes to La Idel to see for herself. FL pays for the body to be cremated. She scatters the ashes in the garden of the Alberthart estate. - Prince Van Brandt of the Osland kingdom. - He’s the Director of La Idel Welfare Centre. - He’s also the Royal Justice of Osland’s Supreme Court. - Ian the head butler was giving Verta very hands-on sex lessons. He was doing this under orders from her perverted fiancé, Count Jean Lawrence. The political marriage with Count Lawrence was arranged by Verta’s father. Count Lawrence is the RH man of Proud Carter. - Verta hated her fiancé Count Lawrence. - Count Lawrence visits FL with his constant companion and bodyguard, Baron Jacquard. He instructs the Baron to force himself onto FL, while he watches. - Janna the maid is hiding in the closet as ordered by FL. Janna holds a mop and shouts loudly for the Baron to stop. Count Lawrence and Baron Jacquard leave shortly after. - FL rewards Janna by tripling her pay and assigning her as FL’s exclusive maid. FL slaps Ian for his warm-up act earlier. - Julie Shade, a Duke’s daughter and Verta’s only friend. - FL visits Julie and finds Julie to be very superficial, condescending, nosy and proud, and not a true friend at all. FL can see why Verta had been avoiding Julie recently. - Blaine Shade, Julie’s older brother. - He works as an accountant in the royal treasury. - Blaine and Julie are in a succession battle. - Duke Shade is the former captain of the royal guard. - FL tells Blaine about an illegal brothel in the Shade duchy that is disguised as a fruit shop and exploits young girls. - FL bribes a new prostitute to drug and castrate Count Todd, a regular at the brothel. Later Blaine has Count Todd treated. - Blaine covers up the incident for Count Todd in exchange for rejecting Julie’s application to join the royal guards. - Blaine asks about the bruises on FL’s wrist. She says they’re from her fiancé (when Jacquard grabbed her wrist). - FL finds out from Blaine that Jacquard is the owner of an underground shop called the Secret Boutique of Dreams. The shop trades in illegal potions. - FL visits the shop and asks for “Sleeping Beauty”, a suicide potion. As she leaves, Jacquard follows her and pulls her into an alley. He searches her and takes the potion from her. FL set this all up to confirm that Jacquard loves her. - FL commissions Yersha to make an undetectable potion that stimulates someone to become violent. She promises to help Yersha return to his homeland of Tatham one day. - FL visits the royal palace to see Count Lawrence. He’s working at the executive administration building. - FL adds the potion to Count Lawrence’s tea. She calls him a eunuch bastard and he slaps her hard across the face. - As FL leaves, Prince Van Brandt sees her bruised face but she won’t comment further when he asks what happened. She can’t have him interfering in her plans. - FL intentionally tumbles down a long flight of stairs so her body is battered and bruised all over. She goes to the Lawrence estate and asks to see Jacquard while she waits for the Count. - Jacquard drinks tea spiked with the potion. He sees how bruised FL is and leaves the room in an agitated state. - Count Lawrence sees Jacquard and makes light of the fact he hit FL. Jacquard punches the Count repeatedly until he dies. - The murder trial is presided over by Prince Van Brandt. - FL is a witness and she gives testimony that supports Jacquard’s defence that he was doing his chivalrous duty as a knight to protect a lady. Both the Prince and Blaine were witnesses to the bruises on FL. His sentence is reduced from the death penalty to 20yrs in prison for manslaughter. - King Charlotte, young nephew of Prince Van Brandt - The Prince shares his suspicions with the King that Proud Carter might be behind the death of the previous King. The official cause of death was pneumonia. - Earlier at the Lawrence estate, FL found a secret bondage room. There was a strange plant in a pot and she took a sample. - After the trial, FL’s carriage is stopped by Proud Carter. He asks if anything was taken from the Lawrence estate when she was there. She feigns ignorance but realises he’s anxious about the strange plant she saw. - At the royal library, FL finds out the plant is a drug that is highly addictive. When taken for a long period of time, scars on the lungs will develop and resemble pneumonia. Death may occur if the drug is stopped abruptly after being taken for a while. - FL fires Ian but he begs her to let him stay. She gives him a letter to deliver personally to her parents who are in Tatham. - FL gives strands of Ian’s hair to Yersha for a spell to make sure Ian completes his task. Yersha is FL’s new butler with the alias “Yen.” - For 2wks, FL regularly volunteers at the La Idel Welfare Centre to get Prince Van Brandt’s attention. He finally notices her weeding the garden outside. She pretends to faint and he carries her inside. - The next day FL visits the Prince and speaks about her suspicions that her late fiancé was illegally distributing drugs. She gives the plant sample to the Prince. - The Prince visits FL and wants her to step back for her safety. When she insists on knowing the reason, he reveals the plant sample she gave him is evidence that the late King was murdered. - Proud Carter’s older sister Felicia married Marquis Amber 10yrs ago. They have 2 daughters. Lily is 10yo while Rosalie is the daughter of the Marquis’ ex-wife. Baron Nathan Hector is Rosalie’s fiancé and Proud Carter’s new RH man (to replace Count Lawrence). - Blaine and FL share a very hot kiss (Ch 30). - (FL flirted and toyed with him earlier, Ch 12) - St Mary Women’s Shelter: FL volunteers here for 3wks to get close to Rosalie. FL exposes the lies and hatred of Margot, a pregnant commoner and former prostitute who took advantage of Rosalie’s kindness and naivety. - FL sees the Prince asleep in the study and tries to wake him from a nightmare. He thinks he’s dreaming when he sees FL and holds her close. Later he visits her to apologise and she realises he has feelings for her. - FL is invited by Rosalie to the Amber estate and meets the family. During a private tea time with Felicia, FL is candid about Proud as her target. Both Felicia and FL agree Nathan isn’t worthy of Rosalie. Felicia will not stand in the way of FL removing Nathan as Rosalie’s fiancé. - FL says her resentment is due to the fall of the Wicker barony that was caused by Proud. Felicia says she lost the succession battle against Proud because of the Wicker barony. He restored the power of the family that was lost when Baron Wicker became independent. - Felicia gives a referral letter to FL for a temporary assistant position at the royal administrative division. Proud Carter is the division head and Nathan also works there. - Julia is an assistant secretary at the royal military division. - Heather Maximilian, admin officer and wife of a Baron. - Her father was a Count but she fell for the wrong man and is now struggling financially after her parents cut her off. She works for the salary, not for fame and power. Her husband runs a small jewellery shop in the capital. - In the past Heather was in love with Marquis Amber. - She blames Felicia for their arranged marriage. - Heather bullies FL on her first day after the male staff pay too much attention to FL because of her beauty. - FL plans to take revenge by ruining her husband’s shop. - Yersha is the 2nd son of Sultan Ganihi. - His mother was a powerless concubine so he had to pretend he was a girl. Niger the Sultan’s wife still threatened the lives of Yersha and his mother every day. Niger killed his mother out of jealousy so Yersha illegally used magic and killed Niger. - Julia invites FL to Blaine’s bday party. - FL is early at the party before other guests have arrived. She presents a building title deed as Blaine’s bday gift. - FL shares another hot kiss with Blaine and his mother sees them. His mother is more concerned about FL than Blaine. - He later admits to FL that he tried to kill Julia in the past. - Princess Helena, Blaine’s childhood friend. He is her 1st love. - Blaine hated Julia who was a selfish and rude child. - When he was 7yo, he tried to kill her with cookies that had rat poison. He gave the poisoned cookies to Helena to share with Julia. His attempt to frame Helena failed and his parents found out what he tried to do after Julia spat out the cookie and became sick. Since then his parents don’t treat Blaine as family anymore. - Instead of being repelled by Blaine’s admission, FL says what she would’ve done to kill Julia in his place. - Blaine confesses to having fallen for FL. He asks her to respond to his confession after her mission with Nathan is over. - Rosalie confronts FL about her feelings for Nathan. - Nathan stops a distraught Rosalie from grabbing FL. Rosalie thinks Nathan is on FL’s side and runs away. FL pretends to try and commit suicide but Nathan stops her. FL falsely claims she’s in love with Nathan. - Yersha makes a drug that amplifies sadness and despair. - FL secretly gives this drug to Nathan in his drinks. - Proud is fine with Nathan breaking his engagement to Rosalie. Proud covets a connection with FL’s family more and tells Nathan to get engaged with FL instead. - Blaine pretends to be FL’s fiancé and warns Nathan against pursuing FL. She drinks a fake poison to kill herself but it’s actually a sedative and she passes out. Nathan is moved by the depth of her feelings for him and drinks what’s left of the “poison” to follow her in death. - Yersha revives FL with another potion. She leaves the room while Yersha performs a ritual to swap bodies with Nathan. Then Yersha kills Nathan. With his new face, Yersha can return to Tatham. - Rosalie visits FL to reconcile. Felicia explained to Rosalie what FL did with Nathan was for Rosalie’s sake. Felicia framed Nathan as a cheating bastard involved with several women. - FL’s parents suddenly return home with just a day’s notice. They surprise her with a new addition to the family, a baby brother called Lucian. - Yersha finds a ledger in Nathan’s secret study. It contains records of smuggling goods. FL shares copies of these records with Prince Van Brandt. He thinks Proud Carter is smuggling gunpowder. It is forbidden to export gunpowder from Osland. Proud must be supplying it to the rebel forces fighting against the royal family in the Richaud kingdom. - Prince Van Brandt heard from the Richaud royal family that the rebels were using gunpowder so someone had to have smuggled it out of Osland. FL credits Nathan with uncovering Proud as the smuggler. Prince Van Brandt agrees to send Nathan (ie Yersha) to Tatham to secretly investigate further. - On the way home, FL’s carriage is ambushed and she’s kidnapped by Baron Ralph Maximilian, Heather’s husband. - The Maximilian jewellery shop is taken over by creditors. Ralph’s spies confirmed FL was behind the demise of his shop. - John, FL’s coachman, ran to the Shade estate and alerted Julie who was riding her horse. Julie goes to help FL but is captured by Ralph’s men. - Before Ralph can rape her, FL stabs him in the throat with a small dagger concealed in a jewelled bracelet. - Blaine and the Shade knights follow Julie’s trail. They kill the other kidnappers. Blaine hugs FL in relief that she’s safe. - FL notices no one came from her family. She suspects her parents hoped she would die, now that they have a son. - FL stays at the Shade estate. - Late at night, she finds Blaine sitting outside her door. She brings him into her room and says she wants to sleep with him. They have sex and Blaine says I love you to FL. (Ch 66-67) - Heather is arrested and imprisoned as Ralph’s accomplice. - Blaine finds a document submitted by Proud Carter with a private request for a special lab. It was approved by Heather. - Only labs with royal permission may borrow and use special magic equipment. - FL shows the document to Prince Van Brandt. He thinks Proud has been secretly manufacturing and distributing gunpowder from this lab. The Prince plans to invite a high profile guest from Richaud to distract Proud so they can investigate the lab. - One night FL overhears her parents arguing. She learns her mother truly cares for her, but her father plans another arranged marriage for FL. She aims to become Countess Alberthart after getting rid of her father. - Yersha (as Nathan) leaves for Tatham. - FL and Blaine have sex outside (Ch 71-72). - Blaine tells FL about Proud Carter and his rumoured sexual preferences. Proud and his wife Grace have been married for 10yrs and are yet to have a child. Grace is most likely disgusted with Proud. Rosalie is a close friend of Grace. - 2nd Prince Avalanche of the Richaud kingdom - All direct members of the Richaud royal bloodline are born with holy powers. - Prince Van Brandt introduces FL to Prince Avalanche. They have located Proud Carter’s secret research centre that is manufacturing and smuggling gunpowder. - FL suggests distracting Proud by investigating Scheinbar in the east. He inspects the region every year and his sexual deviance is hidden there. While Proud is preoccupied with the investigation, they will infiltrate the research centre. - More sex with Blaine (Ch 77) - Rosalie and FL visit Grace Carter. FL speaks privately to Grace about the Crown investigating Proud. FL offers to help Grace and her family in exchange for the details of Grace’s visit to Scheinbar 8yrs ago. - One night, Grace was looking for Proud and discovered a luxurious underground space that had many locked rooms. She saw Proud having sex with another woman through the gap of a slightly open door. - FL is slowly poisoning her father … - More sex with Blaine (Ch 81) - FL learns her father is helping Marquis Carter to smuggle gunpowder into Richaud. - FL, Avalanche and Blaine infiltrate Proud’s villa in Scheinbar. They find Proud’s mistress and discover she is Helena, Avalanche’s long lost sister. They escape with Helena and Proud is charged with her abduction and imprisonment. - Blaine proposes to FL. She accepts. - FL’s father dies. At the funeral, FL talks privately with Prince Van Brandt. She reveals her father was Proud’s accomplice. - Yersha as Nathan captured men from Proud’s smuggling ring and FL hands them over to Prince Van Brandt. - At Proud’s trial, he is also accused of assassinating the King and smuggling gunpowder. He is sentenced to public beheading. - FL reassures Felicia that her daughters will inherit the Carter and Amber names.
