Uzumaki
it should be a universal truth that junji ito is one of the best figures in horror literature. his ability to establish something normal and normally not scary (spirals) into something so horrifying makes him an effective horror writer to me. this is one of those stories that you really like and constantly puts you on edge but would never pick it up again for the sake of sanity.
Gyo
I've read almost all of Junji Ito's works and i can always say that he's an effective horror writer, some oneshots might be a miss for me but he never disappoints with full stories, gyo was scarier than uzumaki. Atleast for me ToT
My Broken Mariko
this manga will always have a place in my heart (REAL) from the art to the story line. shii-chan's love for mariko is beyond romantic love. even at the end, shii-chan fought for her and gave her the freedom she wanted when she was alive. i love their friendship so much i cannot stress this enough ToT
X-day
tfw when u unexpectedly agreed to a plan abt bombing the school with a biology teacher, and schoolmates but end up making meaningful connections (genuinely smiling when being with them too), letting go of what used to give you pain & your past as well as ending up learning to love yourself a little bit more. these said connections also learned to cope with their own issues. what i really like was that this didn't really focus on romance rather, it focuses on picking yourself back up and touches on the challenges students (and teachers) face in school aside academics and how these challenges can potentially interfere with your personal life and emotions.
Line
now this is sum psychological realness. at chapter one i was on edge because the phone call was so suspenseful. if this was a movie this would have the same cinematography as 'Confessions.' unfortunately as i read it the plot lost that exciting kick to it, it becomes predictable and we didn't even get to know what the caller's motive is and how this whole fiasco is arranged.
Osananajimi no Kao ga Yosugite Sakaraenai
ah yes, the obsessed childhood best friend trope. i had to rate this one a 5 because besides the fact that it was funny, commonly you'd see forcing in tropes like this in some manga, BUT U DON'T HERE!! jus a fluffy mutual pining relationship.
Litchi Hikari Club
i hate to say this but even though this is like super messed up, it is undeniable that this is horror done right. it left me disgusted to my stomach really. haven't felt this way since shoujo tsubaki. the girl (which by th way was the only likeable character) really sealed a fate for zera contrary to the old man's prediction. the author is so foul for that koma chapters cause you would think this is a normal manga about clubs. i also liked what this story is based on and i think i will look up more about tokyo grand guignol theater soon.
Jisatsu Circle
really disturbing, it got a little emotional on the end and back to being disturbing again, the fact that the cycle repeats and we never really got to have a resolution (or a happy ending) makes it more scary to me, it ended ambiguously, leaving us to wonder what's gonna happen to Kyoko. Furuya's artsyle made the story more eerie and just sets the vibes of the story. for some reason reading this equates to watching the movie too.
