katlovesfries's manga / #dark(19)

Name Webtoon

Complete | No-e,Bori flower | 2019 released

SUMMARY ["Mr. Ghost, won't you tell me your name now?"] I like the composition of the story. It's very short, but at the same time, it's surprisingly impactful. Basically, two lovers who can't be together in the same timeline - thereby, right person, wrong time.

Shingeki no Kyojin

Complete | ISAYAMA Hajime | 2009 released

SUMMARY [In a world entirely ruled by giants, the human race, which has turned into their food, has surrounded its residential zones with immense walls, which both prevent their freedom outside the walls and protect them from incursions. However, as a result of the appearance of supergiants who cross the wall, a desperate struggle begins and the young heroes, who have lost their parents, fight the giant as a training corps, with a view to regaining their freedom.] I finished this back in April when the last chapter came out, and I still think about it sometimes. This manga is as good as everyone claims it to be. It's not only action-based, but it also puts focus on racism and political differences. I love the questions of "what is the right and what is wrong?" and "who are the bad guys?". Can't wait for the anime to finish up, even though it's an end of an era.

Signal 100

Complete | Miyatsuki arata,Kondou shigure | 2019 released

SUMMARY [A group of high school students were spending their peaceful days freely until they have been chosen as the participants of the game where everyone is being hypnotized until they commit suicide. No one is safe from a sudden death, so what will they do to avoid their fates?] I've been sitting, trying to collect my thoughts on this manga, but I'm speechless. I started reading this a couple of months ago, but I couldn't bring myself to finish it because of a lack of interest. I'm so happy I did, though. This was full of plot twists, and I had no idea what to expect, nor what would happen next. This manga will make you question everything, seriously, EVERYTHING! It plays mind games with you like no other piece of fiction I've ever read. This was such a thrilling reading experience, but keep in mind that non-consensual acts do take place in this manga. Proceed with overall caution.

Tomie

Complete | itou junji | 1987 released

SUMMARY [Every male who encounters Tomie becomes obsessed with her and eventually kills and dismembers her. But Tomie is not human, and is always reborn...] This was certainly interesting, especially seeing how Itou Junju interprets obsession. The art style is fantastic, but I do wish the ending had been a little more "well-rounded" or so to speak. The manga ends abruptly, but maybe that's just me. Tomie is a person who every woman envy, and a person every man will grow to fear. Overall, a very pleasant experience with many unexpected things and situations thrown into the story.

Kami no Hidarite Akuma no Migite

Complete | UMEZU Kazuo | 2000 released

SUMMARY [The six books contains five horror stories related to a primary school kid named Sou. Sou has an ability to foresee supernatural events in his dreams and even to make changes that will eventually happen in reality. The five stories are the Eroded Scissors, the Disappeared Rubber, the Tongue of the Spider Queen, the Black Picture-book, and Shadow Dead. All of the scary stories are linked by his unique experience. WARNING - Contains adult themes.] This manga is horrifying, and the fact that it's told from a small child's perspective makes it even more fucked up. It leaves the readers confused and really grossed out, and I'm still wondering if it's all happening in his head, and if he really is dreaming. With that being said, this is not what I expected, and it's disgusting, but I'm reading surprisingly quickly and can't wait to finish it.

Svaha: The Sixth Finger

Ongoing | Jae-hyun jan,Chawon | 2019 released

From the very beginning, the plot seems interesting, and I'll definitely be waiting for updates. I've taken a liking to the "twisted" views on religion that this story (hopefully) focuses more on. I've come back to this after a couple of months, and can't get back into it. For now, I won't finish it.

Vinland Saga

Ongoing | yukimura makoto | 2005 released

SUMMARY [Thorfinn is son to one of the Viking's greatest warriors, but when his father is killed in battle by the mercenary leader Askeladd, he swears his intent to have revenge. Thorfinn joins Askeladd's group in order to challenge him to a duel, and ends up caught in the middle of a war for the crown of England.] This manga is one of the best ones I've ever read. I started out with the anime, and immediately fell in love with the characters, plot and everything in-between. Thorfinn's character development is so beautiful, yes, beautiful--going from a young boy who's driven by rage and revenge to a man with understanding and compassion for other people. What can I say? I love this manga with all my heart, especially the small amounts of historical accuracy, which makes it all so much more interesting to read.

Fuan No Tane

Complete | Nakayama Masaaki | 2004 released

SUMMARY [It's a collection of very short and mostly atmospheric stories dealing with urban legends, ghosts and superstitions all organized around a specific theme (School, Visitors etc.).Some are just two pages long.] I have mixed opinions about this manga. I loved the many scary panels, but really wanted the stories to be longer. They don't get to evolve when they're so short, but I also understand that a lot has to be interpreted by the readers--even so a little disappointing. The first volume is the best in my opinion.

The Lighthouse

Complete | itou junji | 2019 released

SUMMARY [6 page partial adaptation of The Lighthouse movie included in the booklet given out during the Japanese screening of the movie.] The art style is stunning and very nice to look at. I wish it was longer, though. I'm definitely watching the movie now.
