If You Don't Want to Die

I don't really understand why this is rated so highly, doesn't really seem any good. He got 2 years probation and then he's kicked out of school and his home. How? He's still a minor there's no way this shit would fly. Rather than getting me hyped for what's going to happen next I'm frustrated at every turn by things in the plot I find stupid. Really can't get into it. Also guys refusing to teach him how to fight because "he's not there yet" or whatever just gives me all the rage. It doesn't come off as them judging his adeptness for fighting, it more comes across as them not knowing what the fuck they're talking about. I'd rather they just refuse to teach him on the grounds that it's a pain, and they have no idea how to teach. Which is probably the case anyway. Ugh, really not for me.

Mercenary Enrollment

MC is an amnesiac ex-mercenary and assassin who gets his memories back and is able to make his way home again to his remaining family. He goes to school (high school), and then it's none-stop action, soft moments with his sister and grandfather and people falling for him (in a platonic and not so platonic way) left, right and center. The story isn't some master piece of literature, but it is addicting and binge worthy. As addicting as solo leveling was to be honest. While there's at least one girl who clearly falls for MC it appears to be one sided so far, and I don't think she's annoying. No harem and no annoying love interests, it's great! The characters are interesting and likeable. There's some bullies that become friends, and the fact that they used to be bullies is addressed and talked about. They apologize and seem to sincerely mean it. Personally I don't think that part was handled well, despite me being very happy they addressed the bullying in their past. Still it wasn't completely mishandled either, and I was comfortable reading on. Aspects of this webtoon remind me of early chapters of Nobless (without the supernatural elements) and a little of Solo Leveling (also without the supernatural/game elements). It's fun, the art is great, the english is highly readable and I suspect the translation is on point too. The scanlators seem to know what their doing when it comes to the english language, no word salads being passed off as a translation here! I highly recommend giving this story a go!

SSS-Class Suicide Hunter

This story pretty unique in it's own right, though it's framed and starts pretty normally for a story like this. A not very talented "hunter" dungeon-explorer-dude, one day is so envious of someone who's real powerful he receives the ability to copy skills of those who kill him. Meaning he has to get murdered by someone who's got an ability he wants. First skill he copies? The ability to come back to life 24 hours before he's killed. The adventure continues from there as our MC copies more skills, develops his talents and dungeon dives, or in this case ascends a tower and clears tower floors. What I found unique was that this story also contains visiting different worlds, and our main character is actually a pretty nice guy. The author is clearly fed up with assholes just being assholes and looking down on everyone but still being the main character. I know a few of those stories, I even like some of them, but it's also nice to see someone genuinely be wholesome without also being incredibly naive and um... stupid. There's a few bits and pieces of the story that bother me, mainly to do with his power of kinda sorta being immortal but still experiencing death and how it's difficult for me not to think about the effects all that trauma should be having on his psyche. I mean there are stories where people get tortured into insanity, that's all I'm saying. <_<;; It's perhaps touched upon way later in chapters 70-something, but while I absolutely loved it, I also find it quite late in the story, especially after all he's been through up to that point. Still that's more of a me problem than anything, and I only found this story cause I was looking through the "Revenge" tag. And boy was revenge had! lol All in all, I do recommend giving this story a read. So far there isn't any romance out right, and no harems either. There's a lot of focus on the main character, so getting to know and finding stuff out about other characters is very slow going. Despite this the story is still pretty good though.

Return of the Flowery Mountain Sect

Ongoing | Biga (비가) , LICO | 2019 released

This is a standard reincarnation story with a male protagonist that practices martial arts, but also pretty interesting as what usually happens is MC is strong af and then fights a series of opponents while he gets stronger and stronger, getting the attention of very strong opponents and shit. The difference in this story, is the fact it actually has a heavy focus on restoring the sect MC is part of to it's former glory, which means it's not enough for him to just get stronger and beat people up, but the other people in the sect have to get stronger and overcome their own obstacles too. I like this aspect, although admittedly we don't get that much of it in the first season, but it's something MC is shown to think about a lot. Towards the end of season 1 the sect leader bows to MC and I burst into tears over it, even though it was just a bow. The author is good at getting you emotionally invested in the story and the characters. Everyone seems to have their flaws and I love every single one of them. The comedy is good, and I don't find it obnoxious, but that's a more subjective topic so take that into account. MC's OPness can seem out of place when juxtaposed to the failures of the supporting cast, but I don't find it quite enough to be too much of a problem for me. I can see however, how that could rub some readers the wrong way. There is one female character so far. She doesn't seem to be a love interest though, and she's not written to be really annoying either. She doesn't exhibit much of a personality as she kind of acts like those stoic emotionless emo boys, but I find it mysterious rather than annoying. She also doesn't fall for this oddly mature 10 year old, which is always a plus. ALSO she, as a martial arts warrior (not a seductress black widow), wears her clothing sensibly! She's not there for fanservice, ✧٩(ˊᗜˋ*)و✧ which is amazing. In fact we get no full on nude people, although the guys do get shirtless pretty often. That too doesn't seem to be done for fanservice, which is also kind of refreshing. Also, also no harem shenanigans, so that's great too. A good read and I do recommend giving this a go! Good stuff. ^_^

Manager Kim

Read up to ch 35... really couldn't get into it, ended up skimming a lot of the chapters. More than once it just felt like the plot was spinning it's wheels in non-stop action. By the time the flash back came rolling around I was too checked out to even care about learning about manager Kim's past. The notes kept saying "he's so-and-so's dad" or a character from this other manhua by the author, so I suppose that was one way to keep some of the audience engaged, unfortunately it didn't do anything for me. Real shame, the art is good, but I didn't like the art too much when it came to all the veins sprouting all over people's faces, neck and hands. It lost it's effect after a while, because it was ubiquitous throughout the entirety of the rescue the motivation- sorry, daughter, -arc. Unfortunate for me, but yeah... found this real boring and as such can't really recommend it.

How to fight

Ongoing | Taejoon park,Kim junghyun | 2019 released

This is the story of a poverty stricken highschooler with a hospitalized mother, being bullied at school. He works to try and scrape together money to pay for hospital bills and other expenses. One day he snaps and fights back against one of his bullies. The other person is weak, so it works out and the fight somehow ends up online and going viral. He starts a channel called 'how to fight' and slowly starts making enough money for him to quit his other jobs and pay his bills. Along the way he stands up to bullies, deals with his videos being falsely claimed for copyright and other issues. The art is super good, and consistent, although you can clearly tell that there's a few panels being reused, though even then there are some changes. There's fanservice, but it skews more towards objectifying the guys than the girls. But there is both. The story is very compelling and the MC is very likable, although it does require one to suspend their belief about how certain things work. There's definitely plot holes, but I have found the story and most especially the characters compelling enough to not grow to dislike the series. Sometimes it feels a bit too queerbaity, I'm not actually part of the LGBTQ+ community so I can't say for sure if it actually is or isn't, but there's definitely some chemistry that's there, sometimes used for comic effect, a lot of the time it's just there. MC has plenty of girls crushing on him too, but not enough or in a way where I'd be calling it harem. The comedy is fucking great, it's so good and I love it. There's quite a lot of blood and violence and drama, but the comedy is sprinkled in there in such a way as to not get in the way. Some real WTF moments, that somehow make you laugh again as you think about them, but doesn't make you unable to take the drama and sad bits seriously. Another thing I'd like to gush about is the pacing. That is to say, there's plenty of action, but it isn't ALL action. You get character development, plot progression that doesn't necessarily involve MC fighting, and time to let the story breath after some intense scenes. Now, some of the characters are terrible people and then sort of become supporting cast that you then are supposed to like. Addressing some of the horrible shit they've done isn't done in the best way, and I can see how for some that would be a deal breaker. It wasn't for me, the story is already so ridiculous at times, it's easy to accept, but I can understand someone having trouble with that aspect. The translation is inconsistent. Chapters are uploaded from different groups and they range from competent to frustrating. I ended up going to death toll scanlations site and reading it from there because they have done almost all the chapters except like the first 3, and are ok. They have small grammar mistakes and typos here and there, but nothing that makes you unable to immediately understand what's being said or referred to. It's consistent and I will take small mistakes over translator app word salad any day. All in all I highly recommend giving this a read. Just be prepared for maybe having to change to different site to read.

The World’S Best Engineer

This webtoon is insane. I love it. As the summary says, it's about a guy who seems to be a civil engineering genius who dies in Korea and wakes up in the pages of a novel he'd just read. He's in the body of an alcoholic first born to some frontier baron. Everyone pretty much hates him, and he's destined to die along with his family at the beginning of the story to propel the story's protagonist on the start of his adventure. MC has none of that and uses his civil engineering skills to avoid dying. The art is fun, and fits the story, by which I mean it lends itself to action scenes well. I love how "evil" our MC looks all the time despite him doing absolutely wonderful things. His relationship with the protagonist of the novel is a really fun dynamic, though sometimes (I feel) they seem a bit cruel to each other. They aren't really friends, but you can tell they have some affection for each other. The plot so far doesn't contain any love interests for Lloyd, though as the story progresses and his achievements become greater and greater, father's do attempt to marry off their daughters to him. I don't know why everyone says he's extremely ugly, I don't find that to be the case, but I suppose next to the novel's protagonist he might be a little plain? He certainly makes no effort to dress more like a noble, so that really might just be on Lloyd. He likes his browns. (๑˃́ꇴ˂̀) The only thing I didn't outright like, and this is a personal preference thing, is the textbox. I don't find it funny, nor do I feel it adds much too the story for the "system" to have such a pronounced personality. The humor of it didn't quite land for me, but that's fine, the rest is really good. The characters are likeable, the story is great with a lot of comedy. The translation isn't good for most of the 90-something chapters, but passable. A variety of groups have translated chapters and they change intermittently. Because of this, the names for most characters changes constantly and it's annoying. The translations aren't word-salad level of bad, and I was able to keep reading, though I did have to rearrange words in my head so sentences made sense and also omit words that just didn't belong in sentences. Night scans has a proofreader that doesn't seem to have that much of a grasp of english and I hate that they get paid for stealing other people's work, then translating it. I'm just not down with this, which is why I never "donate". Anyway, this webtoon definitely deserves it's high rating! It's a fucking riot of fun and I highly recommend getting stuck in! ( •̀ᄇ• ́)ﻭ✧

Ori of the Dragon Chain -

Complete | Sime,cadet | 2000 released

It would be alright, but it has a slow start and A LOT of exposition. Any time anything is brought up, a long ass stream of narration and exposition comes in. It slows the pace of the story down to a crawl and you get several chapters where things that should be a bit quicker to happen, take forever. The story is about a kid who moves from the countryside to follow his girlfriend into an adventurer's academy. Rumors wreck his relationship with his girlfriend, and because his abilities stagnate, he's bullied and shunned by the student populace. MC finds a samurai lady to train him in the extremely dangerous nearby forest. The training seems to be only marginally helpful, and then he defeats a dragon and gains better abilities. I dropped this after that cause it took forever, and I ended up being bored. Also some other factors, but I wont spoil them here. The art is good, and the translation (no idea about the accuracy) is good legibility wise. No word salad, so you wont be stuck trying to decrypt every sentence. Also no useless gratuitous fanservice for our underaged characters. Well, so far anyway. Also it doesn't seem to be a harem either, which is good for those who dislike that sort of thing.

The S-Classes That I Raised

This is the story of a guy who's borther dies. Because of his abilities in this game like world he gains power and is able to defeat the monster that killed his beloved little brother. The item he receives for the kill is used to turn back time, and from there mc's adventure really begins. The mystery aspects of the story are introduced slowly, but are extremely compelling. The characters are all likeable, but at the same time they grow to be so many that it's starting to feel like too many characters to keep track. I liked the beginning because there was a lot of wholesome hugging, and there's less of it now. I want more, though I don't know exactly why, but I want more wholesome hugging. Mc's kind of traumatized but it's not really followed through on that much, and there's one real abusive relationship which is initially treated pretty seriously, but then sort of brushed aside a little. Still the story is too interesting to really care about that too much, at least for me. There's some morally grey stuff, although some aspects of that, while addressed, aren't fully explored. At least not yet, there's definitely room to get into that, which keeps things interesting potential-wise. I adore the beast tamer aspect of the story, although I would have liked more time with the unicorns. But that's just me. There's barely any unicorns in fantasy webtoons and I find that a bit sad. Would be nice if they were as common as dragons. Anyway, I digress. The translation is good, the art is great so I recommend giving this story a go.

Ranker who lives a second time

Ongoing | Nong nong,Sa doyeon | 2000 released

I've almost dropped this story a number of times. I get bored and just as it gets to the point where I'm almost ready to give up, the story picks up. The most compelling aspect I think is the revenge. Younger twin dies, leaves behind a diary that somehow makes it to the older twin, and older twin chooses murder- I mean revenge. Revenge murder. Anyway, the story feels like the author wasn't sure what they were doing at the beginning. At one point it almost seemed like they were writing the story as if the first twin had reincarnated rather than leaving diary entries in a watch behind. Also it was very unclear as to how much info was in the diary to begin with. Like i thought what was shown in the initial exposition sequence was it, and was very confused when mc knew about and talked about things that were not included in that sequence. At time I thought he knew waaaay to much about the world, that the brother would have had no reason to write about all that in his diary. There's a love interest that I'm not particularly down with, although they themselves don't actually do anything bad. The girl isn't allowed to fight or anything though. It's implied she's very strong and stuff, but she never fights, or we never see her fight. Which annoys me, cause she's supposed to be a warrior martial artist. <_< The action isn't depicted particularly well through the art, I'm often confused what's happening and sometimes the action is skipped altogether so the artist doesn't need to draw it. This changes somewhat in the later chapters, but there it seems to devolve into lots of lazer firing. I wanna see mc kill all of his brother's murderer's but it's pretty slow going. Also I don't understand why mc bothered going to that world, he'd given up looking, thinking the twin had abandoned them, and just decided he didn't care. Mc's mom died, some years later the brother's stuff makes it to him, and he decides to just go off into the fantasy world. In a way it does make sense, but in another I don't understand why he ended up caring. It would have been nice seeing mc resent his brother, grieve, but ultimately come to this decision of going up the tower. A lot of the thought bubbles are weird too, it keeps containing narration, which is weird since it's supposed to be mc thinking about things. It's very odd. The translation ranges from passable to good, but yeah weirdness with the narration being in the wrong place and speech bubbles that issue from characters who aren't the ones actually speaking. This could be better, and the artist and writer need better communication so the art can actually depict the story better. All in all, meh... it's alright, give this story a go if you wish. It may be better to just read the novel though. Unless the translation for the novel is dog shit.
