July's manga / #Drama(216)

Bakuman

Complete | OHBA Tsugumi (Story) | 2008 released

The art is so good~ I loved learning about the manga industry, it really gives insight on how manga is created and developed, and what a tough profession it is. All the characters are rather bland though, and the two male leads get conveniently paired with two girls who are best friends, but the romance is very underdeveloped. I would have preferred to read more about the two male leads and their trust in each other which helps them work so well together. That's why I'm docking off a star for this otherwise fantastic manga.

Detective Academy Q

Definitely inspired by Detective Conan, it follows a group of children who all have their special talents to solve mysteries. I think it goes downhill after the Plague Village arc, since the characters don't develop much after that. I would have liked to see more Ryu & Kyu rivalry/friendship, but it focuses too much on the Hades and Pluto organization.

Hikaru No Go

Complete | Obata | 1998 released

I really liked learning about Go in this manga. The art is fantastic as usual for this mangaka. I only wished to see more of Hikaru's growth after Sai left, since the end seems a little abrupt to me. Also, he never beat Akira by himself, which was disappointing... He's still always behind him, despite how good he has become.

Full Marks Hidden Marriage: Pick Up a Son, Get a Free Husband

This version of the story is completed. There's another version of the novel in webtoon format with sleeker-looking art, and the female is blonde in that one. The art in this version is not as good, and it ended abruptly due to the new version being released. I enjoyed the interaction between the female lead and the little boy, but there's no real romance developed between the two leads in this abridged and cut version.

Oiran Girl

Complete | HIBIKI Wataru | 2010 released

The art is great, and the story is sugary sweet, maybe even a bit too sweet. It reminds me of Skip Beat, but with oirans instead of actresses. I find it implausible that no one even knew the male lead was a guy dressed as a woman besides the main cast. Some things made no sense plot-wise, but it's a short humorous romantic romp, so I won't be too critical of it.

A Week of Lust

Complete | Fujo King ,Hato ,Ho Ben, Lee Aru ,MEL, Pyo Ryu, Tto Mi | 2017 released

It's a yaoi anthology, so it's written and illustrated by different people. The art differences between stories is super jarring, since some art is good and some art is just terrible. I didn't care for any of the stories that were in this collection. It was just typical BL trash.

Liar Game

Complete | kaitani shinobu | 2005 released

One of the best psychological mangas out there. Akiyama is seriously one of the smartest protagonists in the world of manga. The beginning portion had more interesting games, the end is a little meh, and leaves a lot of open questions, unfortunately. But worth several read-throughs for sure.

Death Note

Complete | ohba tsugumi | 2004 released

The art is fantastic, and the story is good until when L is killed. After that, it goes severely downhill. So many plot holes and there's no one to root for by the end of the manga. Seems like they ran out of ideas by the second half. All the so-called geniuses are pretty dumb in the end, what a let down.

Bastard (hwang Youngchan)

Complete | Carnby Kim,Youngchan Hwang | 2015 released

One of the best dark thriller webtoons out there. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Everyone is twisted, but you want to root for the protagonist. It's worth re-reading after the first read-through!

Hogu Hagyeongsu

Very good dark BL, comparable to Killing Stalking. Art is really good, and the plot is overall well-paced. It has lots of mature themes, so may not be right for everyone. This webtoon is the closest to Killing Stalking in terms of dark BL genre, although Killing Stalking is still superior.
