To be honest, I also really hate it when such a independent main character that is doing well and has plans and goals has everything snatched away by the love interest and suddenly becomes annoyingly dependent and acts like they can't live without the love interest.

Stories like that should be categorized as "Tragedy". No story should be categorized as "Romance" and "Comedy" if the MC ends up with an abusive, cheating, manipulative lover. I don't care if they have a nice face if I want to kill the damn bitch every time I catch a slight glimpse of them.

Its one of those plot points that you try to wrap your head around the author's thinking, but the more you think about it the less sense it makes. Do they want a redemption arc?
