Definitely no hate but I always find it really weird, when characters (especially female) have this extreme fatigue. I understand women of this respective time period aren't known for much, if any physical activity. However, in some mangas or webtoons, not just necessarily this one specifically, the FL would simply walk up a street and BOOM, she's fatigued and in dire need of assistance. I understand there are some things to consider like the point I made above with them not familiar with any physical activity, coupled with their clothing which is probably heavy and of course hot but sometimes it's like hmmmmmm, really now, she's panting for her life with several doctors at hand just from walking or doing something other than social gatherings, it's a bit weird and funny. I can definitely see it being justified but it's still a little silly to me ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
It's the corsets, i've recently watched a lot of history programs and along with the lack of physical activity for women the clothes they wore were actually an absolute nightmare, to the point where they were actively hurting themselves as 'feinting' was actually considered ladylike and pretty so they would purposely wear tight and uncomfortable clothes to cause feinting. On top of that the layers in clothes even those outside of the corset wearing era were hugely heavy, cumbersome and honestly stupid but it caused movement to be a very restrictive and laborious activity. Honestly in the case of this manga i think she has been perceived to be weaker from the beginning and then she was doing a lot at once and in reality that can wear any human down, but people in the olden times were also much more prone to sickness just due to unhygienic practices and living conditions of the time.
Yep. Back in the day, every home of the corset wearing status group had one or more fainting couches, aka chaises. No AC, sweltering heat, layers of clothing plus a corset....was horrible. Women getting light headed, dizzy and full on passing out, was a common occurrence. Their clothing was several layers thicker then the men. Add in the corset and it’s no wonder that fainting spells were so common.
Hoo-kay
Re-enactor here.
1. High class men wore layers too. Undershirt, shirt, waistcoat, cravat jacket. Usually made of heavy materials like wool. Skirts also had structures like paniers and bustle cages that kept fabric away from their legs as well. It's quite breezy. Both genders would change to lighter weight fabrics for the summer.
2. The world was literally colder in the Edwardian/victorian age. There was one year, 1816, called "the year without a summer" it was so cold. So while all those layers seem ridiculous now in our world of global warming, back then you were more likely to die of hypothermia than heatstroke. You ever wonder why four post beds became popular? It was so they could put heavy curtains up so they wouldn't freeze to death in their sleep in the winter. (Also thin gauze bug nets in the summer) Lack of AC wasn't really a problem. Houses where also designed for cooling and heating in mind. Cross breezes were well planned and thought out.
3. Women's corsets were not usually tightlaced. Tight lacing was a fetish, like gaugeing your ears or wearing 8 inch heels today. Even those who did tightlace wouldn't do it everyday. Most cosets were/are no more uncomfortable or life threatening than modern shape/support wear, especially if you've been wearing it all your life. You think half of the population would wear one if they couldn't get on with their lives while wearing one? For generations? The worst that can be said about them is they do encourage muscle atrophy in the back and stomach since it's too much support really.
Look up YouTuber Bernadette Banner for more information on real corsets that real women actually wore and not all the myths and legends, both modern and extant, that you hear.
4. While fainting couches were a thing, they weren't used often except by the sickly. Most of that "lady to delicate to touch" was an affectation of romance novels of the times. An idealized porcelain goddess. It's disseminated to be a trope of how people actually lived to us, their decendants. Take Anne of Green Gables who idealized that notion to the extent of hating her red hair and freckles and robust physique.
5. But on that note, you have to remember that they did have things like lead in their makeup to make their skin more white and such. Lead drinking cups. Lead paint on their walls. Besides environmental factors, all the men smoked. Everyone drank. Hygiene wasn't high on priorities. Nor did they have our modern medicines like advanced antibiotics and vaccines. As someone else pointed out heroine and opium were legitimate medicines. Becoming sickly totally was a thing, both for men and women.
People purposefully starving themselves was no more or less common then as it is today.
There was, however, a lot more people LITERALLY starving. Social security programs like SNAP and WIC here in America today weren't a thing anywhere. There was no government assistance for poverty.
You worked or starved. And if you couldn't work, you starved.
true true, on the last note not just lead they also had arsenic on their walls/clothes etc for that lovely green, as well as aspestos coating everything.
I am aware that there was more than one type of corset and about tightlacing, but in the doco even regular lacing could impact a persons ability to move well, obviously women of today are different to the yesteryear's though.
I genuinely didn't notice a change in art ( ̄∇ ̄") I really love this, I'm accustomed to slow paced or rather and more accurately built up mangas or stories, such as One Piece so I'm chilling with how the chapters are flowing, it's also uploaded more frequently now which make me even more eager to keep reading and up to date (๑•ㅂ•)و✧
I believe she purposely invited the daughter of someone who controls the news or media so word would spread of the incident. The mother is stupidly impulsive and also very manipulative. It's a pity that her only strength is her shallow beauty, hope her face becomes distorted, mutilated and grotesque by the end of this. (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
Since her mother already has a bad reputation it would be more easier to believe. And if news goes out to the public that her mother hits her daughter the emperor who already is in a tight spot will have to deal with the public as well since she is his lover. This is damage the relationship between the emperor and his lover ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ノ~, SHE is VERY SMART, she knows that hitting your child is very down looked upon ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
I love that she is lowkey overpowered.... but with reason pertaining to the plot. I'm dumb for overpowered characters as long as we aren't heading into DBZ territory. Like, that bitch slap.... PERFECTION (≧∀≦)
