It’s the angelic villain archetype meant to give the reader Stockholm Syndrome to empathize with the protagonist (though she seems to be using it as a ploy to get the upper hand). It also can create a sense of cognitive dissonance for the reader which can make them more invested in consuming more of the story to resolve the secondhand moral dilemma. Don’t feel badly, it’s intended to create internal conflict for you. Doesn’t mean you condone perps committing such heinous crimes in real life. If anything, you were found this bc you were looking for a story with a strong female protagonist, right?
