1. I didn't like the seme for manipulating the uke's emotions just to get his jollies, especially knowing the inferiority complex he already had
2. I didn't like the uke for not STANDING TF UP! Like, I get it; he has an issue with his self esteem, but letting him (seemingly) use you as a substitute is just...nope. He barely got any character development.
What's worse is that, if this were written better (and maybe a little longer), it actually could've been a tease for the viewers that eventually evolved into the uke standing up for himself. They could've let the seme have his deplorable fetish, have the uke eventually stand tf up, and they end mutually liking each other on equal ground.
The people rendering readers' problems with the lack of character development as nothing but an inability to recognize a "slowburn", please be so fr. The problem lies in the stagnancy of the characters coupled with no healthy, foreseeable redemption at this point.
Dan has the constitution of a wet paper bag, which once began as endearing, but now borders on insufferable. JK is an angry, abusive monster who seemingly lacks empathy. This is all we have seen as an audience for 50+ chapters and has hardly deviated.
There's a myriad of red flags I was originally able to overlook, because with proper storyteling, they could have been apologized for or explained away. Now, it just seems like there's no realistic, satisfying redemption I can see for this. For me personally at this point, there is no apology, backstory, or otherwise that's gonna justify JK being as unhinged as he's been.
Anyone looking through the previous chapters for human moments for JK realistically are only going to find two: Him speaking with Granny and him showing a modicum of consent after getting drunk.
"He paid off Dan's debts!" - because it was an inconvenience to him that Dan had other things distracting him from solely focusing on his physical therapy. Need I remind you, he walked in on Dan getting ROCKED by his debtors, and his first thought wasn't "Oh no, Dan! Do you need help?" It was "You're late." The only reason he beat them up was because they challenged him, not because he was concerned for Dan.
In order to avoid making this post any longer, I'll skip over him referring to Dan as his "property" and skip to where I lost all hope:
Dan decides he wants to get the rich man a heartfelt present. Instead of asking this man for a raise that he knows said man can easily afford, he takes a night job; he works tirelessly for that man by day, then makes his money for his present at night. Said man notices how tired he is, but doesn't care or ask about his health. Once Dan finally gifts said man the present, instead of appreciating it or the work Dan put into getting it for him, he throws it away. He then mocks him for being so sentimental and berates him for exhausting himself and not focusing solely on his physical therapy.
I've read "slowburns", and the good one still have better ways of portraying potential for a healthy, realistic love story than this has. If not, the author gives clear and/or nuanced indication as to why the love might result in toxicity. This story makes it seem like there's supposed to be a light at the end of the tunnel, while giving us nothing but Dan torture porn.
It’s quite blatantly obvious that there’s nothing redeeming about JK, but what I’m surprised is people trying to justify his actions. Like baby, ain’t nothing justifiable about his shitty attitude towards not just Dan, but to everyone around him. I hope everyone reads your comment and also can agree with what you’re saying!
I agree. I don't know why some people are acting like some of us are being too sensitive about stories with violence and abuse. We're fujoshis, so basically grew up on toxic BL, and we know what a toxic turned healthy love story looks like.
Examples of slow burn stories where the "top" had a major redemption was Maya from Hidoku Shinaide and Seungho from Painter of the Night. With Maya, he was abusive and we could tell that he genuinely did like Nemugasa and just had trouble expressing it in a healthy way. With Seungho he was also toxic but he did care about Nakyum and slowly began to show it in their sexual interactions and by buying gifts. He just needed to show his love with holding Nakyum hostage and abusing him.
However, with JK we can't tell if he even likes Dan or not. It's been confirmed that JK does like Dan from what his actor friend said but nothing in his actions shows that. Even the "kind of nice" things he's done like saving him from those thugs and letting him live in his house were things that ultimately benefitted him.
Personally, I'm still going to read the story because I still kind of like it. I do hope that people aren't being rude or hateful to the author but people are allowed to voice their disagreements with the direction the story is going.
Wtf the other half of my comment got cut off, what came after “target audience” was: ‘like no bitch, people are right to be critical that we’re over a year, fifty-fucking-one chapters in, and both Dan and Jaekyung only have shown a microgram of character development.
And plus, with the chapters being so short (fucking 10 days for a 3 minute read? Bruh), no shit that people are getting fed up and feeling like the story is just spinning in circles.’
Why do emojis sometimes cut off comments :(((
1. For the people who whined in the comments about incest...
A. They gave a whole content warning about it.
B. Why did you read it if you knew you were just gonna come bitch and moan about it? Baffling fr
2. Before I start waxing poetic, I liked the incest. Cry about it. If all you can see is the taboo, you're automatically gonna miss out on the story itself.
That aside, I really liked the story. I had read a comment that I liked that showed that the author never once said "incest good." The crux of the story was more about the psychological and moral aspects between the two: a brother who was desperately trying to keep up appearances for the sake of living up to the potential his brother saw in him, and a brother who (eventually) realized said brother wouldn't be able to reach his full potential if he were to remain around.
(I'm purposely disregarding the epilogue for the moment)
The best part to me was the juxtaposition between Akio's views and Motomaru's. Akio was fucked up on the inside and presentable on the outside, and his brother was the opposite. Motomaru, despite being aware that he was a fuck up, still had a decent understanding of societal expectations (e.g. cleaning the house before the teacher arrived, working a job that he hated, apologizing to Akio's FWB). Akio, with the mindset that all he had to do was "break" his brother, was genuinely surprised when he could still be so cordial as to formally apologize to that girl despite enduring days of being violated.
I personally feel like some people misinterpreted the epilogue, but I already wrote a detailed response comment to someone, so I'll try and keep it short: Motomaru, whether he wanted Akio or not, did everything in his power to keep him on the right track. He knew Akio loved him, but he ignored it for his sake. The kid had a bright future ahead of him, so why would he immediately fuck that up? Get a job, encourage his relationship, encourage his education; when none of that worked, run away. It was only when he realized - even years later - that his brother was always gonna be fucked up that he could finally just say "fuck it" and be with him.
All right. I made it to Ch.41 before I finally gave up. The only sane one is the best friend and 9 times out of 10, MC would turn his back on his friend to be unreasonably downbad for ML.
I have a particular disdain for BL that rely on miscommunication as a running plot point, because it
1. is rarely done effectively
2. drags out the plot for an insanely long and frustrating time
Next to that is the fact that you thought this man was gonna kill you, yet you were so blinded by your obesession that you allowed yourself to not only be alone but also intimate with him. Then, when you finally realize he's not out to get you, you still continue to lie??? He already had your tea the minute he picked up your phone, girl! (〜 ̄△ ̄)〜
I tried to get over how normal the author tried to make a 7-year stalker and overly-possesive reverse stalker, but it just kept getting worse...
I genuinely just want a side story and just for the best friend, cause he was sexy, reliable and deserved better than what he was given.
I feel like I could write a 10-page, MLA format, 1" margins, Times New Roman research paper on how much I enjoyed this.
1. The art
2. The compelling plot
3. The revelation that they're both very weird, yet still accepted one another
4. THE SMUT (Thank you, Rose Scans lol)
5. The subversion
I think this is honestly one of the most seat-gripping plots I've read in a while. I truly feel like they could've continued this into another season, but I'm nonetheless happy with how it ended.
I shouldn't be, but I'm surprised by the amount of people that didn't know males could squirt. It's a common misconception that it's just piss. True, it's MOSTLY piss lol, but it's a strange combination of semen and piss that can be caused by stimulation from the front or the back.
How do I know...? Don't ask questions you don't want the answer to (● ̄(エ) ̄●)
I do like Dan, and I've read BJ Alex, but why is there a common theme among this author of a decent, demure person falling in love with an absolute trashbag of a man? It took 40 chapters to see Ol' Meanbutt even show a SHRED of the concept of consent - and it was cause he was drunk! Like???
P.S. If I have hear Dan apologize to Captain Cumsock for one more obvious transgression against his person, I'm gonna lose my marbles (⊙…⊙ )
I'm gonna keep reading it, but it mirrors the plot methods from Boy Meets Girl beat for beat, but without nearly as much depth or room for redemption. Dude drugged this man, changed his genetalia, SA'd him and then didn't even have the decency to take his life-altering change seriously. Worst of all is the seme's motivation for doing so being nothing but internalized homophobia.
Like, if you're in it just for the cvntboy smut, cool. But is it too much to ask for some consent and a decent (unique) story?
This is my exact sentiments. Call me a hypocrite because I do like Boy Meets Girl but this Seme makes me want to hurl in this one. Urgh. I’m peacing out. I hope he ends up with the pharmacist.
