I'm getting the feeling that the girl either moved or she passed away. In Japanese society, it is sadly not uncommon for young adults or even older adults to take their life because of the hateful nature of others. To me, this does hit home to a point because mental health is looked down upon in this day n age. To anyone else what he did might have seemed like a generic backstory but tbh this is something that does happen.

Yukino truly wanted to help because he saw someone being bullied but in doing so he caused more harm than good. It made him avoid making connections with others, which is sad. It is not a disappointing plot point but a very real-world relatable issue.
